Men's Soccer

Men's Soccer Falls To Ferrum on Golden Goal

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon fell to Ferrum after the Panthers found the golden goal in the 94th minute of play on Saturday afternoon. After R-MC found the early goal, Ferrum was able to take advantage of a pair of man-up situations to complete the victory.

The Basics

Score: Ferrum 2, Randolph-Macon 1 (OT)

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./R-MC Soccer Field

Records: Ferrum 5-2-0 (1-1-0 ODAC), R-MC 3-4-0 (0-2-0 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Moments into the game, junior Christian Torres (Stafford, Va. / C.D. Hylton) crossed the ball from the right side of the box to a jumping sophomore Dylan Ogletree (La Plata, Md. / La Plata), who headed the ball above the keeper and into the back of the net.
  • R-MC got more opportunities early. Senior Peyton Chichester (Richmond, Va. / James River) and freshman Judge Morgan (Okinawa, Japan / Kubasaki) each got opportunities at shots, including Chichester's, which was on goal.
  • The Yellow Jackets got another huge chance 15 minutes in as junior Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va. / Benedictine) struck a corner kick that was almost headed in by junior Isaac Myers (Littlestown, Pa. / Gettysburg Area). R-MC spent much of the first half on attacking, outshooting Ferrum 8-3 in the first period.
  • Tides would turn however when Torres was sent off in the 52nd minute. Ferrum was able to turn that moment into some offensive opportunities, getting a trio of shots over the next eight minutes.
  • R-MC got two dangerous chances at the 59 minute mark as Chichester hit a header that was blocked and Morgan tried a shot that got past the goalie but was sent out by the Panther defense.
  • The one man advantage didn't last long as Ferrum's Nelson Manzanares was sent off for his second yellow card in the 62nd minute.
  • Ferrum got a group of chances around the 70 minute mark. One of the chances made it into goal as Ferrum's Michael Lyons tipped a shot from Mbambi Mbongu into goal to tie the game at one each.
  • Ogletree was sent off in the 80th minute because of his second yellow card, again presenting Ferrum with a man advantage.
  • Senior goalkeeper Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) made a critical save with seconds remaining in the period as Mbongu struck a shot that Breslin kept out and forced overtime.
  • In overtime, Mbongu took a short tip from Sam May and slipped it past a diving Breslin to score the game winner.

Inside The Numbers

  • Ogletree marked his first goal of the season while Torres marked his first assist.
  • R-MC outshot Ferrum 18-16 in the match
  • Breslin made six saves, including five in the second period
  • Both teams were even with three corner kicks, two coming in the first period and one coming in the second period.
  • There were 39 fouls called in the game, with 20 coming from Ferrum and 19 from R-MC. In addition, 12 cards were issued, though a pair of reds came out of second yellows.

Key Players

  • Chichester played a crucial role through the middle, giving the team chances with his ability to capture first balls.
  • Defender Myers got a pair of huge chances in the game, with a pair of shots coming on goal. While playing back in his normal position, Myers along with junior Paul Duffy (Salem, Va. / Salem) and sophomore Aaron Eiser (North Chesterfield, Va. / Monacan) and freshman Ryan Staton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) were crucial in limiting Ferrum's chances, especially in the first half, keeping any opportunities by the Panthers in front of them and rerouting the balls back to the midfield
  • Junior Josh Beeker (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) proved to be a needed spark through the midfield, handling those duties from off the bench. He won numerous tackles, as did Morgan and Astruc, keeping R-MC from giving up too many opportunities to Ferrum early.
