VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Randolph-Macon men's tennis suffered a 7-2 setback at Virginia Wesleyan Thursday afternoon. The loss dropped R-MC to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference while VWU moved to 11-6 and 6-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
The afternoon began with a pair of VWU wins in doubles. Senior Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's School) and freshman Alex Hein (Windermere, Fla. / Windermere Preparatory School) were not able to overcome VWU's Nick Gunther and Mitch Perry, as the Marlin pair won 8-0 in #1 doubles. Sophomore Grant Sarver (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) and freshman Erik Moulton (Yorktown, Va. / York) were able to take three games from VWU's Paul Gladstone and Michael Portela, but the Marlin #2 duo still secured the win 8-3.
Junior Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) and sophomore Jack Aprahamian (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) got Randolph-Macon's first win of the afternoon with a #3 doubles win 8-6 over VWU's Anthony Wilson and Andreas Combos.
R-MC got a second win when Sarver defeated Combos in #2 singles 6-2, 6-1.
But VWU won down the rest of the lineup. Haines was defeated by Gladstone in #1 singles 7-6, 6-4.
In #3 singles, Hein ran into trouble with Gunther, losing 7-5, 6-1. In #4 singles, Moulton was defeated by Perry 6-4, 6-1.
Carter was able to snatch a set from his opponent, Wilson, but eventually lost at #5 singles as well. Aprahamian finished out the day against Portera with a 6-3, 6-4 loss.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action at home against Roanoke on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM.
