Hornets & Yellow Jackets Exchange PK's, But Lynchburg Adds One More For 2-1 Loss

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md. / West Nottingham Academy) nailed Randolph-Macon's first penalty kick opportunity of the year, but Lynchburg had one too and added a header into goal by a Hornet senior to doom the Yellow Jackets to a 2-1 loss.

Lynchburg opened the scoring in the 56th minute after a scoreless first half. A Randolph-Macon foul in the box led to a LC penalty kick conversion and the Hornets took the 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Lynchburg's Freddy Flores headed the ball into goal for the 2-0 advantage.

Randolph-Macon got their first penalty kick opportunity of 2017 as a foul on freshman Ruben Niamien (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) inside the box led to McHugh getting the opportunity to convert. He did, giving the Yellow Jackets one of the goals back with 20 minutes to play. McHugh's penalty kick was the first Randolph-Macon penalty kick opportunity since his brother, Logan, took and made a PK last year at Washington College on September 11. It was the only PK try of 2016.

But the remaining minutes would not provide the equalizer for R-MC (13-2, 6-2 ODAC) as the team left Lynchburg (14-1-1, 8-0 ODAC) with the 2-1 concession. With the loss, Randolph-Macon falls from second to fourth in the hunt to host an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament match,  behind Washington & Lee (11-3-1, 6-2 ODAC).

Randolph-Macon outshot the Hornets 7-4 in the first half, but conceded seven shots in the second half while only coming up with three. Lynchburg held the corner kick advantage 7-1 as well.

McHugh led the Yellow Jackets with five shots and two on goal. Sophomore Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va. / Benedictine) had two shots with one falling on goal. Senior Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) and sophomores Josh Beeker (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) and Christian Torres (Stafford, Va. / C.D. Hylton) each took a single shot in the match.

Junior goalkeeper Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) saved three shots in the loss.

Randolph-Macon will play its final game on the road at Bridgewater on Tuesday at 4:00 PM. The ODAC Tournament is set to begin on Saturday, October 28. The top four seeds will host quarterfinal action at a time to be determined.
