Seniors Lead The Way With Two Goals In Final Regular Season Home Match

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon's seniors led the way for the team in their final regular season home match as both Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md. / West Nottingham Academy) and Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) scored for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va. / Benedictine) added one and the bench added two more to notch the team's 13th win of the season against Shenandoah 5-0.

Astruc scored with under two minutes to go in the first half to open scoring for either team. In the 44th minute, her fired the ball into the top corner of the net from outside the 18-yard box. Astruc notched his fourth goal of 2017 with the score.

McHugh scored R-MC's second goal in the 51st minute as sophomore Paul Duffy (Salem, Va. / Salem) headed the ball over to the senior and he rushed around the SU defense to head it into goal. It was McHugh's fourth goal and Duffy's third assist.

Just two minutes later, Lutz headed a ball into goal off a cross from sophomore Christian Torres (Stafford, Va. / C.D. Hylton). Lutz notched his eight goal of the year and now leads the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in goals scored. He also leads the conference in points with 18. Torres earned his third assist for the effort.

Freshman Ruben Niamien (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) scored off the bench in the 80th minute after he slotted the ball past the keeper after being played a through ball from sophomore Enrique Dubon (Woodbridge, Va. / C.D. Hylton). It marked Niamien's third goal and Dubon's first assist.

Freshman Paul McLaughlin (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Chapel Hill) also added a score from the bench. McLaughlin took a deflected ball into the net for the score with Niamien gaining the assist for the play. It was McLaughlin's first goal and Niamien's second assist.

The Randolph-Macon back line, made up of seniors McHugh and Jake Tyler (Colonial Heights, VA / Colonial Heights) as well as Duffy and sophomore Isaac Myers (Littlestown, Pa. / Gettysburg Area) allowed only one shot the entire match. That shot fell away from goal. Defensively, R-MC only allowed one corner kick to Shenandoah as well.

Lutz led the team in shots, taking seven on the night with three coming on goal. McHugh, Astruc and senior Peter Nelson (Charleston, WV / George Washington) each took three shots. Astruc had two come on goal while McHugh and Nelson each had one. Overall, the team took 25 shots with 13 coming on goal.

Following the game, Lutz, McHugh, Nelson, Tyler and senior manager/student assistant coach Liam Hogan (Haymarket, Va.) were all recognized for their efforts as part of the Yellow Jacket soccer program. The seniors, who started their careers 4-13 in their freshmen year, have now been part of a program with a 75.56% winning percentage in the last two years. 

Randolph-Macon will be on the road for the remainder of the schedule. The team plays at Lynchburg on Saturday at 7:00 PM and on Tuesday at Bridgewater at 4:00 PM.
