Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – The R-MC men's soccer team won its opening game in ODAC play with a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Paul Duffy (Salem, Va./ Salem) scored the only goal of the game, which was his first collegiate goal, while also helping the defense record a clean sheet.
Junior Peter Nelson (Charleston, W.V./ George Washington) had an outstanding afternoon for the Yellow Jackets. He was able break down the Eagles defense while playing an important role in the center of midfield.
The R-MC point leader for the season, senior Logan McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./ West Nottingham Academy), was influential in the attacking midfield role and orchestrated the offense for the Yellow Jackets. He led the team with two shots on goal and made Bridgewater goalkeeper Mark Davis make two great saves to deny him.
The only goal of the game came in the 50th minute. A McHugh corner was whipped into the box and after a scramble in the six-yard box, Duffy was able to pounce on the loose ball to poke home the only goal of the game.
Helping the R-MC defense record its third clean sheet of the season were sophomore Peyton Chichester (Richmond, Va./ James River) and junior Jake Tyler (Colonial Heights, Va./ Colonial Heights) who played important roles for the defense. R-MC showed their depth in the squad with many player making impacts in the game off of the bench.
Another R-MC player who made an impact was senior Liam Hogan (Haymarket, Va./ Battlefield) who was a threat to the Bridgewater defense with his movement off the ball.
R-MC will be back in action on Tuesday, September 27 when it travels to William Peace. The Yellow Jackets continue ODAC play when they host Emory & Henry at home on Saturday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m.
