ASHLAND, Va.—The fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon men's tennis team edged No. 5 Roanoke 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the 2016 ODAC Tennis Tournament to advance to the semifinals for the first time in school history.
The Maroons (7-8) returned to the Banks Tennis Center for revenge after the Yellow Jackets (12-4) claimed an 8-1 victory over Roanoke just a week ago.
Roanoke held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Junior Pablo Bordas (Caracas, Venezuela / Briar Woods) and freshman Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) won 8-5 at No. 3 Doubles.
Senior Tom Lewis (Charlottesville, Va. / Western Albemarle) leveled the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 Singles before sophomore Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) put R-MC ahead with a 6-4, 6-2 performance at No. 4 Singles.
The match was tied again at 3-3. The Yellow Jackets took a 4-3 lead after Haines rallied at No. 3 Singles. Haines dropped the first set 6-1 but claimed the next two sets by scores of 6-4, 6-3 to get the win.
The Maroons countered by claiming another singles victory to knot the match at 4-4. R-MC's fate was in junior Stuart McCroskey's (Newport News, Va. / Menchville) hands. McCroskey powered to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 Singles to lift the Yellow Jackets over Roanoke.
Randolph-Macon awaits the winner of No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan vs. No. 8 Lynchburg. The Yellow Jackets will play the winner on Saturday, May 7 at Washington & Lee. Since the new postseason format was adopted in 2007, this will be the first year that both R-MC tennis teams have advanced to the semifinals in the same season.
