ASHLAND, Va.--The Yellow Jackets rallied from deficits in two of three doubles matches to down Guilford 7-2 in their ODAC home opener on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles action, senior Tom Lewis (Charlottesville, Va. / Western Albemarle) and junior Alex Curnow (Culpeper, Va. / Midlothian) rallied from a 5-6 deficit to defeat Chasen Chacon and Graham Pearson of Guilford (0-4, 0-1 ODAC) 9-7 at the No. 2 position. At the No. 3 position, junior Pablo Bordas (Caracas, Venezuela / Briar Woods) and freshman Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) also rallied late in the set, eventually topping Levi Bruff and Mason Church 8-6. At the No. 1 slot, senior John Adam (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) and sophomore Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) claimed an 8-5 win.
Holding a 3-0 advantage after doubles, the Yellow Jackets (2-1, 1-1 ODAC) added four singles wins to claim the ODAC victory.
In singles play, Lewis rolled at the No. 2 position, defeating Mason Church 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, Carter and Curnow both won tight second sets, with Carter winning 6-3, 7-6 and Curnow winning 6-3, 7-5. At the No. 1 position, John Adam won 7 of 8 first-set tiebreaker points en route to winning 7-6, 6-4.
The Yellow Jackets take on Harford at the Banks Tennis Center in a non-conference matchup tomorrow, Sunday March 6 at 11 a.m.
