Box Score ASHLAND, Va.- The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team upset #11 Albright in the opening game of the R-MC Tipoff Classic, 70-66. Freshman forward Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./ Halifax Academy) recorded her second double double (19 points, 10 rebounds) of the season, as she led the Jackets to victory over the Lions.
R-MC (1-1) had an outstanding first half and capitalized on the Lions turnovers. R-MC shot 37% from the field, with senior Taylor Intermill (Fairfax, Va./ Fairfax) leading the team at half with seven points. The Jackets outscored Albright 19-8 in the first and 14-12 in the second quarter.
Williams had a stellar game both offensively and defensively, she finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Lions responded with a strong third quarter, showing their #11 national rank and outscoring R-MC 31-16. Albright was voted 11th in D3hoops.com's preseason poll.
Two Yellow Jackets joined Williams with double figures as freshman Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va./ Glen Allen) scored 10 points and junior Kareema Conteh (Riverdale, Md./ Pardkdale) finished with 12 points.
With just under a minute to go and the score tied at 66, Conteh scored a layup to give R-MC the lead with just 23 seconds to go. On Albright's ensuing possession, Williams stole the ball and was fouled. She then made two clutch free throws to see out the game and give the Yellow Jackets their first win of the season.
R-MC plays tomorrow in the final game of the R-MC Tipoff Classic, sponsored by Riesbeck Contracting, at 4:00 p.m. vs Greensboro.
