Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's soccer team came from behind to defeat Hampden-Sydney 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday night. Junior Peter Nelson (Charleston, W. V./ George Washington) scored both goals for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon dominated the game and led in shots 20-6, while holding Hampden-Sydney to just one shot on target.
The Tigers did make the most of their chance, as Hunter Weiland scored from outside the box to give the visitors the lead 23 minutes into the game.
R-MC came out hot in the second half and controlled the possession of the game. R-MC would equalize from a set piece in the 56th minute. Senior Logan McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./ West Nottingham Academy) whipped a corner towards the back post that junior Brian Lutz (Fairfax, Va./ W.T. Woodson) headed onto the post, but the rebound fell to Nelson who turned the ball in the back of the net.
The Yellow Jackets outshot Hampden-Sydney 11-2 in the second half, but both teams were level after 90 minutes, forcing the game into sudden victory overtime.
Just four minutes into overtime, R-MC found the winner. A free kick from midfield bounced off a couple of Sydney defenders before finding its way to Nelson inside the box and he made no mistake with the chance and scored his second of the game and third in three games, giving the Yellow Jackets the 2-1 victory.
The defensive line was led by freshman Paul Duffy (Salem, Va./ Salem) and senior Jack Maxey (Salem, Va./ Salem).
R-MC improves to 9-2-2 and 5-1 in the ODAC while the Tigers fall to 6-6-1 and 1-4-1 in the ODAC.
The Yellow Jackets will be back on the pitch on Saturday, October 22nd for Homecoming Weekend when they host EMU at 2 p.m.
