ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and five of six singles in posting an 8-1 ODAC victory over Shenandoah on Sunday at the Banks Tennis Center.
In No. 1 doubles, seniors Ryan Byrd (Toano, Va./Warhill) and Ira Usry (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) fought to an 8-6 win. Senior Connor Hoerr (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) teamed with junior John Adam (Vienna, Va./James Madison) to take No. 2 doubles 8-2. Sophomore Matt Coyne (Stafford, Va./Stafford Senior) and freshman Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) dominated at No. 3 doubles 8-1.
Usry lost just one game at No. 4 singles in a 6-1, 6-0 victory to stretch his ODAC singles win streak to eight. Hoerr took a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Alex Curnow (Culpeper, Va./Midlothian) registered a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 singles. Junior John Adam (Vienna, Va./James Madison) pulled out a three-set victory at No. 3 singles (6-3, 3-6, 6-0) to extend his ODAC singles win streak to 13 matches. Junior Tom Lewis (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) won on a tie-breaker at No. 6 singles. Byrd lost a tight 7-5, 7-6 decision at No. 1 singles.
Randolph-Macon continues conference play on Thursday, March 12 at home against Washington and Lee.
