GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Randolph-Macon men's tennis team fought hard, but fell to Guilford 7-2 in its ODAC opener on Saturday.
In doubles action, seniors Ryan Byrd (Toano, Va./Warhill) and Ira Usry (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) fell to Guilford's Turner Votipka and Erik Meiler 8-2 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position, junior John Adam (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and senior Connor Hoerr (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) pushed Guilford's Aaron Smedley and Trevor Cox to a tiebreak, before succumbing in a tough 9-8 decision. Sophomore Matt Coyne (Stafford, Va./Stafford Senior) and freshman Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), making their first start in ODAC doubles play, lost an 8-5 decision to Levi Bruff and Mesa Martorell.
In singles action, Usry and Adam claimed the Jackets' two points. Usry held off Mesa Mortorell in a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 4. Adam fought back from a 4-2 deficit in the second set to down Erik Meiler in a third set tiebreak at No. 3, 5-7, 6-4, 11-9. Hoerr pushed Trevor Cox to a third set tiebreaker before falling 10-3. Sophomore Alex Curnow (Culpeper, Va./Midlothian) fought hard at the No. 6 position, before falling to Mason Church 6-1, 6-4. Bryd fell to Guilford's No. 1, 6-1, 6-2.
Adam and Usry are currently riding 12-match and 7-match winning streaks in ODAC singles play, respectively, dating back to last season.
