Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman forward Marisha Berry (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) recorded five of her nine steals in the final five minutes of this evening's contest to hold Virginia Wesleyan to four points over that span and a 66-61 Randolph-Macon triumph in ODAC women's basketball.
With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, the Marlins (13-7, 7-4 ODAC) held a 57-50 edge over R-MC (15-5, 8-3 ODAC). However, a 14-4 Yellow Jacket run would propel R-MC past VWC to victory. Berry's five steals ignited six Marlin fouls that resulted in the final 10 Yellow Jacket points made on free throws.
The Marlins took the early lead with eight unanswered points to begin the game. R-MC responded with a 12-6 run to come within two points. The first tie of the half occurred as Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) nabbed a three pointer to take the score to 18-18. The Jackets would then force 13 Marlin turnovers to keep the contest close before regaining the lead. A steal by Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, VA / Patrick Henry)in the final minute would set up a jumper by junior Kellie Cortina (East Northport, NY / Northport) to take the 37-36 R-MC edge. Another Livermon three and a layup by Stephanie Staples (Mechanicsville, VA / Atlee) added the four point insurance going into intermission.
Randolph-Macon was outshot 33.8% to 29.7% from the field but would capitalize on VWC errors by shooting 77.4% from the line. Junior Taylor Huber (Ashland, VA / Patrick Henry) led all scorers with 25 points. She also picked up three steals. Anderson recorded her tenth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards. Livermon and Staples each added eight points while Berry tallied an R-MC season-high nine steals.
The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team travels to Hollins University this Saturday, February 8th for a 2:00 PM ODAC tipoff. The Yellow Jackets return to Ashland Saturday, February 15th as they host Guilford College for their annual Pink Day.
Currently the women's basketball program is selling pink t-shirts and pink socks as well as raffle tickets for a pink basketball autographed by the 2013-14 team.
