Box Score Ashland, VA – Shenandoah scored the only seven points of overtime as the Hornets held off R-MC for a 65-58 win on Tuesday night.
Lauren Vugteveen led the Yellow Jackets with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Khajae Hester and Sarah Parsons each chipped in with 11 points, while Katie Anderson pulled in nine rebounds to go along with her nine points.
Randolph-Macon jumped out to a slight 10-6 lead after Parsons drained a free-throw with 12:30 left on the clock.
The Hornets answered, going on a 15-6 run to take a five point lead with just under six minutes to play.
On R-MC's ensuing possession, Paige Mills was fouled and made one free-throw attempt to spark what proved to be a 14-7 run in the last five minutes of play to help the Yellow Jackets take a 30-28 lead into the intermission.
The Hornets opened up the second stanza strong, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 16-6, to take a 44-36 lead with 12:22 left to play.
R-MC began to chip away at the Hornet lead and pulled within one after a 7-0 run capped by a Hester layup to pull within one.
With the Hornets leading 58-56 with 35 seconds to go, Vugteveen drained a jump shot to tie the game and send it into overtime. SU had a chance to win, but Nicole Gilbertson's jump shot with one second left on the clock fell just short.
During the overtime period, the Hornets kept the Yellow Jackets scoreless as they went on a 7-0 run to take the 65-58 victory.
The Hornets were led by Crystal Petrus who posted a game-high 31 points along with seven rebounds. Holly Chittenden and Gilbertson joined Petrus in double-figures with 10 points each.
R-MC will be back in action on Saturday the 16th as they play host to the Lynchburg Hornets. Tip-off is set for a 4:00 p.m. start.
