Box Score SALEM, Va--- Randolph-Macon College picked up an important road win against conference foe Roanoke Friday evening in the Bast Center. The Yellow Jackets improved to 14-10 overall, 12-7 in the ODAC, while the Maroons fell to 7-16 on the season, 7-12 in conference play.
Taylor Wieczorek eclipsed the 1,000 Point plateau after knocking down two free throws with just under two minutes remaining. Wieczorek posted her eighth double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 11 boards. The senior from Grasonville, MD became the second Yellow Jacket this year to reach the milestone joining Maggie Roy in the 1,000 point club.
With the win and a Bridgewater loss, Randolph-Macon moved into sole possession of fourth place in the ODAC.
Roy led R-MC in scoring, tossing in a game-high 20 points and four rebounds. Christina Phelps came off the bench to add a spark for the Yellow Jackets, chipping in 12 points and seven boards in 18 minutes of action.
Paxton Gwin and Rachael Dellehunt both scored 17 points for the Maroons. Tatum McKee led RC on the glass, pulling down 16 boards.
Randolph-Macon shot 39.3% from the floor, in addition to 19-of-22 shooting from the free-throw line. The Jackets remain the top team in the conference from the charity stripe, shooting 72% on the year.
Roanoke went 25-of-64 (39.1%) from the field, including 4-of-11 from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets held a 41-40 advantage on the boards and R-MC tied a season-low with 11 turnovers on the evening.
Trailing 56-55 with five minutes to play, R-MC outscored Roanoke 15-8 to close out the contest. The Jackets have now won nine of their last 12 games.
The first half was played tight throughout, with no team leading by more than three points. Roy sent Randolph-Macon into the break up one, 33-32 on a three with 29 seconds remaining in the first stanza.
The second half proved to be much of the same as the lead changed hands five times before R-MC made its final push with five minutes remaining. Phelps ignited the run with consecutive baskets before Roy and Wieczorek added buckets to push the advantage to 61-56 with 3:27 showing on the clock. The Yellow Jackets would lead by as many as 10, 66-56 before Roanoke would score late to give the final score.
Randolph-Macon returns to action tomorrow, Saturday February 18th when they close out the regular season at Hollins. Tip-off is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
