Yellow Jackets Stage Second-Half Rally, but fall 74-71 to Lynchburg in ODAC Opener

ASHLAND, VA – Freshman Katie Anderson led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 24 points, but Lynchburg outlasted Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball 74-71 on Tuesday night in ODAC action.

The Hornets shot 36.1% from the floor and went 9-for-9 from the charity stripe, which led to a nine-point LC (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) advantage at the half. The Hornets held R-MC (0-4, 0-1 ODAC) to just 14.3% from the three-point line and 32.4% from the field in the first stanza.

Lynchburg was able to maintain a double-digit lead at the outset of the second-half, extending its advantage to 57-41 with 13:39 left in the game after a pair of free-throws by Lauren Penley.

A Sarah Parsons three-pointer on R-MC's next possession sparked what proved to be a 21-5 run over the next six minutes, capped by a pair of free-throws from Parsons to tie the game at 62-62 with 7:05 to play.

Back-to-back baskets by Shea Kelley gave LC the lead back at 67-62 with 6:32 to go in the game.

Trailing 72-67 with 2:45 to play, an Anderson bucket pulled R-MC within three and following a defensive stop on the other end of the court; Anderson made two shots at the free-throw line to make it a one point game with less than two minutes to go.

LC converted 2-of-4 free-throws down the stretch to extend its lead to 74-71.  With three seconds remaining, R-MC had a chance to tie, but its three-point-attempt missed and Chaney Forbush secured the rebound and the win for the Hornets.

In addition to her offense, Anderson had a team-high eight rebounds. Parsons chipped in with 15 points.   Khajae Hester led the team with three assists and recorded two steals on the evening.

Lynchburg held a 54-35 advantage on the glass, paced by Forbush who notched a double-double with 15 points and 14 boards. Shannon Allan also recorded a double-double with a team best 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Sammi Goldsmith finished with 12 points and a game-high six assists.

Randolph-Macon returns to the court Thursday at St. Mary's of Maryland.  Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
