Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-- The Randolph-Macon College Women's Basketball team used a strong second-half to erase a seven-point halftime deficit and score a big ODAC road win at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, topping the Marlins 73-66.
R-MC (10-8 / 8-5 ODAC) got 17 points and 15 rebounds from senior Taylor Wieczorek in the win. Sarah Parsons led all scorers with 18 points off the bench for R-MC, while Maggie Roy matched her classmate Wieczorek with 17 points. Jillian Asay had a strong game on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds in the win.
The Yellow Jackets, who made just nine field goals in the first-half, found themselves down 33-19 with just two minutes to go in the opening stanza. Back-to-back buckets by Asay and Wieczorek cut the lead to 10 and a three-pointer by Roy with seven seconds to go sent the teams to the locker room with VWC up 33-26.
Baskets by the Marlins' Kristen Blalock and Sarah Seipp to start the second-half pushed the VWC lead back to 11 points.
After a Blalock jumper put Virginia Wesleyan on top 41-30 with just under 18 minutes to play, R-MC stormed back with a 20-4 run over the next nine minutes. Parsons led the Yellow Jackets over that stretch, pouring in nine points. The freshman drained a jumper to cap the run and put R-MC in front 50-45 with just over nine minutes to play.
A three-pointer by Roy and a jumper by Wieczorek extended the R-MC advantage to double-digits at 63-53 with 4:46 to play.
The Marlins rallied, scoring 11 of the next 13 points, pulling to within one at 65-64 when Symonne Newsome made a layup with 1:28 to go on the clock
Wieczorek responded with a jumper on R-MC's ensuing possession to make it 67-64. Parsons and Roy would then combine to go 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 40 seconds to seal the win for Randolph-Macon.
Virginia Wesleyan (14-4 / 11-2 ODAC) was led by Blalock who had 17 points, while Seipp had 11. VWC shot 32.4% for the game, making 23-of-71 shots from the floor in the loss. VWC was also 16-of-26 from the foul line.
Randolph-Macon is in the most grueling part of it's schedule this season, taking on the top-three teams in the ODAC in one week. Following VWC today, R-MC travels to Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. game, before returning home to take on Guilford Friday at 7:00 p.m.
