Hot Shooting Pushes R-MC Women's Hoops to Road Win Over ODAC Foe Lynchburg, 79-67

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va--- Randolph-Macon topped Lynchburg, 79-67, Tuesday evening in Turner Gymnasium.  The Yellow Jackets improved to 9-8 overall, 7-5 in the ODAC, while the Hornets fell to 4-12 on the season, 3-8 in conference play.

R-MC has defeated Lynchburg six straight times, dating back to December of 2009.

Taylor Wieczorek led Randolph-Macon with her third double-double of the season.  The senior from Grasonville, MD finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.  Maggie Roy exploded for the Yellow Jackets, tying a career-high with six made three-pointers (6-of-8 from behind the arc) on her way to 21 points and six assists on the evening.  Sarah Parsons added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Shannon Allen paced the Hornets with 21 points, while Carly Greenlief chipped in with a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards.

The first-half was well played and close throughout, as R-MC took an early 16-10 lead with 12 minutes remaining after a three by Roy.

Lynchburg responded, putting together a 9-3 run to tie the game at 19 midway through the first stanza.

LC would lead by as many as five, at 32-27, after a three point play by Allen.  The Yellow Jackets then battled back closing the half on a 16-7 run, led by three trifectas from Roy in the final three minutes of the half to take a 43-39 lead into the intermission.

Wieczorek led the way in the second half, tossing in 15 points.  She started the half with six straight points in the opening two minutes to fight off a run by LC and keep the lead at five.

The Hornets continued to fight, cutting the deficit to one, at 49-48, just over three minutes in.  That was as close as Lynchburg would come, as the Yellow Jackets tightened up the defense, holding the host squad to just five made field goals for the rest of the game.

The women went on a 21-9 run over the next eight minutes to put the Hornets away and take a 14 point lead off two Wieczorek free throws.

Lynchburg made one final push, cutting the lead to single digits, 73-65 with just under three minutes to play.  However, five straight free throws by R-MC would seal the win down the stretch.

R-MC connected on a season-high seven threes, shooting 46.7% (7-of-15) from downtown.  Randolph-Macon's stingy defense forced 20 turnovers, including 11 steals.  Parsons, Caroline Young, and Christina Phelps combined to outscore Lynchburg's reserves, 21-13, in points off the bench.

The Yellow Jackets returns to action Saturday, January 28th when they go on the road against the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan.  Tip-off is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
