Randolph-Macon Women's Hoops Blows Past Hollins 76-53 in ODAC Action

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va--- Four players scored in double-figures for the Randolph-Macon College women's basketball team as they topped Hollins, 76-53, Saturday afternoon in Crenshaw Gymnasium.  The Yellow Jackets improved to 7-7 / 5-4 in the ODAC, while Hollins fell to 5-8 / 4-5 in conference play.

One night after head coach Carroll LaHaye became just the second coach ever from the ODAC to join the 500 win club, R-MC began a new win streak using balanced scoring and pressure defense.  The Yellow Jackets were led by Taylor Wieczorek, who finished with a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Fellow seniors Maggie Roy and Jillian Asay chipped in 17 and 13 points respectively.  The 13 points tied a career-high for Asay, who finished 5-of-8 from the field.  Freshman Sarah Parsons added 10 points to finish in double-figures for the 11th straight contest.  R-MC has had four players score 10 or more points in each of the last five games.

Randolph-Macon held the ODAC's leading scorer Jasmine Greene to just 5-of-20 shooting from the floor.  Greene still scored a game-high 18 points to go along with 10 boards and Lacie Forrest added 12 points for Hollins.

The beginning of the first half turned out to be a battle as both teams traded blows and the lead changed hands six times.  With the score tied at 20 with just over six minutes remaining, R-MC put together a 15-7 run to close the period.  Freshmen Kellie Cortina and Parsons combined for 10 points during that stretch and the Yellow Jackets would never look back.

R-MC scored the opening six points of the second half to take a 41-27 lead three minutes in.  Hollins immediately responded with an 8-2 run of its own, capped by a Brandi Chesne lay-up to cut the deficit back to eight with 14 minutes to play.

The two teams traded baskets over the next two minutes with a  Green bucket cutting the Randolph-Macon lead to 49-42.

R-MC then ran off nine straight points, ending with a three pointer by Madison Dulaney to put Randolph-Macon up 58-42 with eight minutes remaining.

With Hollins trying to claw their way back in the game, Roy slammed the door, pouring in nine points in 90 seconds to give the Yellow Jackets a 69-49 lead with three minutes left on the clock.

Randolph-Macon forced 26 Hollins turnovers, leading to 13 steals on the afternoon.  R-MC was efficient from the free throw line, going 22-of-30 (73.3%) from the charity stripe.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Tuesday, January 17th when they travel to ODAC-foe Randolph College.  Tip-off is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
