Randolph-Macon Uses Stifling Defense to Down Roanoke 56-45

Box Score

Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball (18-6 / 16-3 ODAC) held Roanoke to a season low 44 points on a season low 27.3% shooting to capture a 56-45 victory over the Maroons Friday night in Ashland.

Maggie Roy paced the Yellow Jackets offensively with 11 points while Taylor Wieczorek joined her in double figures with 10 points and six boards. Guard Jennifer O'Briant pulled in a career high 11 rebounds to go with her eight points and four assists.

Jordan Gholson tallied a double-double for the Maroons with 14 points and 16 boards while teammate Nicci Moats finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

With 12:32 to go in the first half, R-MC's Lindsey Sharman dropped in a layup to give the Jackets a 12-6 advantage but Roanoke rallied for the next five to pull within one.

After a three and a half minute scoring drought for both teams, Randolph-Macon broke out with a 6-0 run on four points from Wieczorek and a Maggie Roy fast break layup with 7:08 left in the first.

Roanoke rallied late in the first half with an 8-0 streak capped with a Gholson layup that put the Maroons up 23-22 with 2:31 on the clock.

Jordan Cantrell put the Jackets back on top in the next possession with a three pointer and a Cantrell layup before half time sent R-MC into the locker room up 27-25.

Randolph-Macon scored seven of the second half's first eight points including a Katie Williams three to give the Jackets a 34-26 edge with just over 18 minutes to go.

Rebecca Bays knocked down a free throw with 11:21 on the clock that pulled Roanoke within five but that would be as close as the Maroons would come as the Yellow Jackets led by as many as 16 before finishing with 56-45 win.

R-MC held Roanoke to a season low 44 points on another season low of 27.3% shooting. The Maroons shot 1-for-11 from beyond the arc but held a 54-50 edge on the glass.

The Yellow Jackets shot 30.1% from the field including 25% from the three point line and assisted on 16 of their 22 field goals.

Randolph-Macon now sits in a first place tie with Bridgewater College atop the ODAC standings. With a win in their final regular season home game Saturday against Hollins (6-18 / 3-16 ODAC), the Yellow Jackets will enter tie-breaker scenarios for the top seed in the 2011 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament. Bridgewater (21-3 / 16-3 ODAC) hosts Emory & Henry (4-19 / 3-16 ODAC) in their regular season finale on Saturday.

R-MC tips off with Hollins at 5:00 in Crenshaw Gym and before the game seniors Jennifer O'Briant and Kaite Williams will be honored.
