Box Score ASHLAND, Va --- The Randolph Macon College Women's Basketball Team opened their 2011-12 season with a 67-51 win over Marymount University.
After being picked to win the conference in the 2011-12 Preseason ODAC Coaches Poll, the women started the season off on a positive note. The victory was head coach Carroll LaHaye's 495th of her career, putting her just five shy of the 500 win milestone. She currently ranks 15th on the all-time wins list in Division III. R-MC has now defeated Marymount three consecutive times.
Randolph-Macon jumped out to an early 14-4 lead six minutes into play, behind six points from Molly Brown. Marymount then battled back, going on an 11-2 run over the next six minutes to cut the lead to one on a jumper by Katelyn Fischer. The remainder of the half was played evenly on both sides, as the Yellow Jackets took a 29-24 lead into the break.
Brown knocked down two jumpers to begin the second stanza and push the advantage to 35-27. The Saints then went on a 7-0 run to make it 35-34. The Yellow Jackets broke the game open midway through the second half with a 9-2 run to push the lead to 48-38, highlighted by seven points from Taylor Wieczorek.
Marymount never got any closer than six throughout the contest when they cut the deficit to 50-44. A three point play by Wieczorek and a three pointer by Maggie Roy pushed the lead back to 12 and the Yellow Jackets never looked back.
R-MC outrebounded MU 40-31, including a 13-10 edge in offensive boards. The women also forced 26 turnovers, recording 12 steals. The Yellow Jackets shot 56.5% in the second stanza, while holding the Saints to 36.0% from the field.
Randolph-Macon finished with four players in double figures, led by Wieczorek who finished with 17 points and five rebounds. Roy added 13 points, while Brown chipped in 12 points and four boards. Roy is now just nine points away from 1,000 for her career. Fischer paced the Saints with 25 points, going 8-12 from the field and adding six rebounds.
The women return to action this weekend as they host the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic. Roanoke College, Mary Washington, and Christopher Newport will all travel to Ashland to take part in the tournament. Play is set to begin Friday at 6:00 p.m. when they Yellow Jackets take on the Captains of CNU.
