Box Score Washington, DC – Randolph-Macon quarterback Zac Naccarato threw for a career-high 372 yards and four touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets knocked off Catholic 51-34 in the Nation's Capital on Friday evening.
Randolph-Macon is now 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC, while CUA drops to 3-2 and 0-2 in the league.
Naccarato finished the day 25-of-31 passing. Christian Cook was able to grab 13 balls for 212 yards on the night. Vance Hendren ran for two touchdowns and caught seven passes for 104 yards and a score as well for R-MC.
In the first half of play, the teams combined for 51 points and 545 yards of offense and saw R-MC hold a 30-21 lead after the first 30 minutes.
Naccarato completed 11-of-13 passes for 201 yards and three scores. Seven of those passes went to Cook for 160 yards and two scores. The second of which, a 66 yard hook up with 1:49 to go in the half.
R-MC took the opening kickoff of the second half and promptly drove 64 yards on 11 plays in 5:46, extending its advantage to 37-21 on a four yard plunge by Hendren.
It took CUA just over two minutes and seven plays to respond on its next possession, the final nine yards coming on a Jason Howard TD catch. The point after missed, making it 37-27 with 6:41 to go in the third quarter.
Randolph-Macon moved into Cardinal territory on its next possession, only to see its field goal attempt fail. CUA got the ball back and four plays later got a 58 pass from Greg Cordivari to Alonzo Cooke to pull within three at 37-34.
A key play in the game occurred on R-MC's next possession after punter Josh Storm was forced to track down a bad snap that had rolled inside the Jackets 30 yard line. Before CUA could gain possession, Storm calmly collected the ball and was able to get a punt off that put CUA inside its own 20.
The change of field position proved key when R-MC held the Cardinals, forced a punt and turned around, scoring on a Naccarato to Cook pass from six yards out.
The Yellow Jackets defense came up big when Catholic got the ball back, forcing a three and out to give the R-MC offense another chance to score.
Nacarrato and company needed just five plays to go 45 yards as Hendren again scored from one yard out on third down and goal, making it 51-34 with just over eight minutes to play in the game.
The R-MC defense was led by Brandon Harrison who had nine tackles, while Abel Simpson, Chris Pace and Matt Daugherty each have five stops.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts defending ODAC Champion Washington & Lee. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. and is part of R-MC's Homecoming weekend.
