Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va--- Randolph-Macon dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime at Randolph in the First Round of the ODAC Tournament. The men finished the season with a record of 7-7-2, 5-3-2 in the ODAC, while the WildCats improved to 14-5, 6-4 in the conference on the year.
R-MC defeated Randolph, 3-2 earlier this season in Ashland for the first time. The men ended their season winning three of their last four.
"Today was a really well played match. Both teams really battled and Randolph found a way to come out on top in overtime. They are a tough team, but I am really proud of my players for this season, especially my seniors. They enjoyed a lot of success this season, their most wins and a huge victory at Hampden-Syndey" said Head Coach Peter McEvoy.
After a scoreless first half, R-MC struck first when Fernando Rochi found Mike Urbanik on a through ball just eight minutes into the second stanza. The goal was Urbanik's team-best fifth of the season. He ended his career scoring in his final two matches.
Randolph evened the score on a header by Jacob Lusczek off a corner in the 72nd minute. The score remained tied at the end of regulation forcing overtime.
Four minutes into the extra period, Will Wolf scored his third goal of the year to give the WildCats the win off the golden goal.
Ethan Cornelio, Rochi, and Urbanik all posted two shots on goal for Randolph-Macon.
Senior Matty Rocawich took the loss and totaled five saves in his final match in the Black and Lemon. Rocawich started in goal in all but one contest this season and finished third in the conference in saves with 77. Carter Smith picked up the win in goal for Randolph, recording two stops on the afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets finished the season with the most wins since 2007 and the most in a season for any member of the senior class. The men just missed out on hosting an ODAC Tournament game.
Head Coach Peter McEvoy elaborated more on how proud he was of his senior class, "These kids just continued to work hard and get better each season. I am very proud of them for that. Urbanik played hurt the majority of the year, missing three weeks with a concussion and still led us in points and goals. It would have been fun to have him healthy all year. Cornelio played almost every minute in the midfield for us this season and set a great example on and off the field. Rocawich is one of the best keepers in the league this year and played with a ton of heart every gamea. Matt Andes came in and made a lot of really good runs for us and put pressure on defenses. Brad Plasha and Tyler Cornelio provided great leadership and I will always remember this class for their hard work."
McEvoy remained positive about next year though, stating "We return a lot of depth next season, our backline was comprised of all underclassmen. "
R-MC returns all but five starters and look to improve on this season's record. All-ODAC and All-Academic awards will be announced at a later date.
