Box Score SALEM, VA-R-MC Sophomore Maggie Roy finished with 16 points and
a four for five mark from three but Roanoke College used 54.5%
second half shooting to get past the Yellow Jackets 67-66 in Salem
Thursday night. Randolph-Macon falls to 14-5 (12-3 ODAC) while
Roanoke improves to 18-2 (15-1 ODAC).
Freshman Madison Dulaney (Kernersville, NC/ Glenn ) put the
Yellow Jackets up 18-11 with 12:46 to play in the first when she
knocked down a three to cap a 10-2 R-MC run. Katie Williams
(Warrenton, VA/ Faquier) started the run two minutes earlier with a
mid range jumper.
Randolph-Macon took a 32-15 lead with a 14-2 run, capped when
Molly Brown (Floyd, VA/ Floyd Co.) converted a foul shot on a three
point play with 4:59 to go. Molly Ariail ignited the 14-2 spurt
with a layup at the 10:54 mark.
The Maroons cut the Yellow Jackets' advantage to 39-27 at the
half on a made free throw by Kylie Lucas.
RC's Caitlyn Long started a 15-1 run when she converted a layup
with 18:45 remaining. Jordan Gholson sunk a layup five minutes
later to cap the run to bring Roanoke within just one at 43-42.
The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes before
the Yellow Jackets extended their lead back to five on an old
fashioned three point play by Jennifer O'Briant (Chesterfield, VA/
Manchester).
RC rallied to within two before Long drained a three at the two
minute mark to give Roanoke a 63-62 advantage.
With just under a minute to play, Roy (Richmond, VA/ Mills
Godwin) rattled in a trifecta, putting the Yellow Jackets on top by
one.
The Maroons retook the lead when Rebecca Bays converted a layup
with 34 seconds remaining.
Up 67-66, Roanoke missed a free throw with six seconds to play
but, Randolph-Macon missed a shot at the buzzer and the Maroons
pulled out the 67-66 win.
Roy dropped in a team high 16 points while also pulling in eight
rebounds. Ariail and O'Briant joined Roy in double figures with 15
and 10 points respectively.
Nicci Moats led Roanoke with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a
double-double. Gholson also chipped in with 16 points and Long
scored 15 to go with her three steals.
Due to the impending weekend weather forecast for the entire
Commonwealth of Virginia, the ODAC Women's Basketball game between
Randolph-Macon and Hollins University has been moved from Saturday
to Thursday, February 11th at 7:00 p.m.
R-MC Women's Basketball returns to the court Tuesday, February
9th, when they host Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 p.m.
game.
