SALEM, VA-R-MC Senior Molly Ariail finished with a game high 20
points and 14 rebounds but it was not enough as EMU upset the
second seeded Yellow Jackets 69-64 in the ODAC Tournament
quarterfinals.
Eastern Mennonite scored the first four points of the game on
the way to an early 8-3 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets then used a 5-0 run capped by an Ariail
(York, PA/ York Suburban) to tie the game at 8-8 with 15:34 to go.
Both teams exchanged baskets over the next few minute before the
Royals' Danielle Rittenhouse converted a free throw at the 9:51
mark, sparking a 10-0 EMU run to go up 26-16.
Eastern Mennonite led by as many as 13 in the first half before
Randolph-Macon finished the first half with a 6-0 spurt to cut the
Royals' lead to 36-31 heading into halftime.
The Yellow Jackets came out of intermission with an 8-2 run to
take their first lead of the game at 39-38 on a Renee Stein
(Harrisonburg, VA/ Spotswood) layup with 16:57 to play.
Addie Bashorun put the Royals up by six when she finished off a
7-0 Royal's run at the 11:37 mark with a layup.
R-MC's Katie Williams (Warrenton, VA/ Fauquier) converted a two
with 5:32 to play, tying the game a 53-53.
This would be as close as Randolph-Macon would get, as Eastern
Mennonite made 12 of 14 free throws down the stretch to hold on for
the 69-64 victory.
Ariail finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman guard
Madison Dulaney (Kernersville, NC/ John Glenn) chipped in with 10
points and five rebounds while her classmate Jordan Cantrell
(Washington, NC/ Washington) added eight points.
Rittenhouse led three Royals in double figure scoring with 17
points. Sara Lamneck finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds while
Miranda Wolfe chipped in with 10.
The Yellow Jackets conclude the 2009-10 season with an 18-7
overall record and a second place ODAC finish at 16-4.
