Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH. - Danny Jones'
bucket with 0.4 seconds remaining propelled No. 17 Randolph-Macon
to a 64-62 ODAC road victory over No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan.
With R-MC up 62-60, the Marlins' Stephen Fields knocked down a
mid-range jumper to tie the game.
The Jackets then took a
timeout with seven seconds on the clock. Off the inbounds,
Eric Pugh broke a double team and was able to feed Jones and drop
in the winning bucket.
R-MC improves to 19-4 overall and 10-4 in the ODAC. VWC falls to
20-3 and 11-3 in the league. It is Randolph-Macon's first win
at VWC since the 2003-04 season and marks the fourth ranked
opponent R-MC has beaten this season.
Jones' final basket was two of his
team-best 13 on the afternoon. Jordan Brown also had 13
points, while Brandon Braxton added 10 as well. Jones
led R-MC with eight points to help R-MC to a 39-34 edge on the
glass.
VWC was paced by 23 points by
Fields and 14 points from Donald Vaughan. Vaughan also had a
game-high nine boards and six blocks on the day.
Randolph-Macon jumped out to a nine
point first half lead when Matt Blumel drained a jumper, making the
score 22-13 with just over seven minutes to play.
VWC then went on a 14-5 run, tying
the game at 27 all when Fields knocked down a three-pointer with
3:11 to go.
The remainder of the half saw four
lead changes with the Marlins holding a slim 33-32 advantage when
the buzzer sounded.
The second-half was much of the
same with neither team being able to open up more than a four point
lead, while the second stanza featured five ties and five lead
changes as well.
With the score tied at 50-50 at the
midway point, back to back buckets by Jones and Browon gave the
Yellow Jackets a four point lead with 9:06 to play.
A Fields trifecta on VWC's ensuing
possession brought the Marlins back within one, before Jones
extended the R-MC advantage with a three-point play on the other
end of the court.
Fields and Brown then
each made a pair of free-throws for their respective teams,
making the score 59-55 with 5:44 to play.
A three-pointer by Chris Astorga
cut the Jackets to lead to one. After Brown made one-of-two
at the charity stripe, Astorga converted another jumper to tie the
game at 60-60 with 2:16 to play.
The Marlins forced a defensive stop
on R-MC's next possession, and then had three shots to take the
lead on its ensuing possession, but the Yellow Jackets got
the ball and Jones put Randolph-Macon up 62-60 with 43 seconds
left.
Randolph-Macon will be back in
action on Monday when it hosts Lynchburg at 7:00 p.m.
