Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon got 12 points from Maggie Roy and 10 points from Taylor Wieczorek as the Yellow Jackets knocked off No. 14 Mary Washington in the first game of the 2010 Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic in Ashland.
R-MC (2-0) also got eight points from Katie Williams and Jordan Cantrell, while Jennifer O'Briant chipped in with seven points, including five crucial tallies down the stretch. The Jackets were 17-of-49 from the field, registering assists on 11 of those made field goals.
Mary Washington (0-2) was led by Katie Wimmer who had 13 points, while Jenna McRae and Rachel Martin had 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Eagles held a 39-35 advantage on the boards with McRae leading the way with eight rebounds in the loss.
R-MC started off hot, building a 17-2 lead out of the gate on Lindsey Sharman bucket with just over 12 minutes to go in the half.
UMW chipped away and were able to pull within four points at 32-28 whenMartin made a layup with three seconds to go in the first stanza.
The Eagles came out in the second half and tied the game at 40-40 on a pair of free-thows by Brieneke Matthes with 11:33 to play.
The game remained close, with a three pointer by McRae vaulting UMW ahead 50-44 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest.
The Jackets battled back, getting back-to-back buckets by Sharman to pull within two at 50-48 with 4:36 to play.
After two foul shots by McRae put the Eagles ahead 52-48, R-MC got a jumper from Christina Phelps and two shots from the charity stripe from O'Briant to even the game at 52 all with just over three minutes to go.
Following a McRae jumper to put UMW up two points, O'Briant would spark what proved to be an 8-0 run to close out the game for R-MC with a three pointer with 2:57 to play.
Randolph-Macon will take on USA-South member Ferrum College at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Mary Washington will face Roanoke at 2:00 p.m.
