Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, VA-Despite 9 for 18 shooting from beyond the
arc, Mary Washington overcame Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball
71-54 Monday night in Fredericksburg. Molly Ariail recorded her
seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds
as the Yellow Jackets fall to 8-3 overall.
Jennifer O'Briant (Chesterfield, VA/ Manchester) put the Yellow
Jackets up 11-4 with 15:03 left in the first half when she knocked
down three consecutive three pointers.
Less than a minute later, Molly Brown (Floyd, VA/ Floyd Co.)
sparked a 9-2 Yellow Jacket run when she netted a three point
jumper. Ariail (York, PA/ York Suburban) capped the run on a free
throw to complete a three point play, putting Randolph-Macon up
20-8 with 13:26 to play in the first stanza.
With R-MC leading 28-17, UMW guard Jenna McRae knocked down a
three with 8:28 remaining in the first half to ignite a 16-3
Eagles' run. Kate Carlezon capped the Mary Washington run with two
free throws giving the Eagles their first lead of the game 33-31;
UMW would take the lead into halftime.
Ariail converted two free throws just after the intermission to
tie the game at 33-33 but, Mary Washington then used a 12-2 run
capped by a McRae layup with 8:46 left, to pull away from
Randolph-Macon, winning 71-54.
Ariail and O'Briant paced the R-MC attack with 14 points each,
O'Briant knocked down four of five three point shots. Sophomore
Maggie Roy chipped in with 10 points and three assists.
McRae led all scorers with 25 points while pulling in eight
rebounds and shooting three for four from beyond the arc. Kate
Wimmer finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists for
the Eagles.
Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball will be back in action Friday,
January 15th, when they travel to Guilford College for a
7:00 p.m. game.
