Special Teams Shine in R-MC Football's 17-14 Win over

WINCHESTER, VA - Randolph-Macon returned a punt block for a
score, blocked a potential go-ahead field goal and Josh Storm
booted a game-winning kick as the Yellow Jackets knocked off
Shenandoah 17-14 Saturday night in Winchester. R-MC is now 1-2 on
the season, while SU drops to 1-2 as well.
With the score tied 14-14 with 12:47 to go in the game, Storm
converted a 25 yard field goal to give R-MC a 17-14 lead.
The Yellow Jackets held a 14-7 advantage at the half after two
key special teams plays led to two scores. R-MC got on the board
with 2:32 left in the first quarter on a two-yard plunge by Steve
Mathews. The scoring drive was set up by a fake punt on
4th and 10 from the 50 yard line in which punter Ben
Keyser ran 25 yards for the first down.
The Jackets special teams struck again on the Hornets ensuing
drive when Ian Overstreet blocked a punt on the SU 24, the ball was
scooped up by Brandon Harrison on the 20 yard line and returned for
a touchdown to double the R-MC lead to 14-0.
SU cut the lead to 14-7 with just under four minutes left in
opening half when Anthony Cordero capped off a nine play, 49 yard
drive with a two yard scoring run.
The game remained that way until 2:46 left in the
third quarter when a one yard scamper by Cordero tied the game at
14-14.
After Storm's field goal, the Hornets drove to the Jackets six
yard line but the drive stalled forcing a field goal try in which
the Jackets blocked to preserve the its three point advantage
with 1:21 to go.
The Yellow Jackets defense then came up big on the Hornets final
two drives, forcing a pair of interceptions, one byJehmel Williams
and one by Mark Jackson with four seconds remaining to ice the
contest.
The Jackets finished with 118 yards rushing on the game, 61 from
Mathews and 41 by Thaddeus Scruggs. Austin Faulkner was 11-of-22
for 64 yards in the win. Blake Horton and Jaryd Grimsley each had a
team-best seven tackles for R-MC.
SU was paced offensively by Keone Kyle who rushed for 151 yards.
Vern Lunsford was 9-of-19 for 141 yards. Joe Lunsford registered a
game-high 13 tackles in a losing effort.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action next Saturday at Catholic
in the ODAC opener for both teams. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
