R-MC Tops Roanoke 85-80 in ODAC Men's Basketball

ASHLAND, VA - Randolph-Macon used four players in double figures
on its way to an 85-80 ODAC Men's Basketball victory over Roanoke
Wednesday night in Ashland.
R-MC (15-5 / 9-2) was led by Justin Short who, posted a
team-high 17 points on the night. Fellow starters Jordan Brown and
Boris Varela had 16 and 12 points, respectively on the night, while
Danny Jones tallied 11 points off the bench, including eight in the
second half. Varela posted his third double-double of the season by
adding 10 rebounds and Brown notched his first of the year with a
game-high 11 boards. The duo helped R-MC to a 42-33 edge on the
glass.
RC (16-5/ 8-4 ODAC) got 18 points from Drew Gaeng, who knocked
down his first six three-point attempts on the night. After being
held scoreless in the first 20 minutes of play, the Maroons' top
scorer Curtis Peery rebounded to tally 13 points in the second
stanza before fouling out. Parrish Walker added 14 points and Logan
Singleton chipped in with 10 in the loss.
The game was tight in the early stages before the Jackets closed
the half with an 11-2 run that was capped by a buzzer beating
three-pointer by Erich Pugh that sent his team to break up 47-36.
The Jackets pushed the lead to 13 on a bucket by Brandon Braxton
30 seconds into the final period. RC clawed back, cutting the R-MC
advantage to three at 60-57 when Peery knocked down a jumper with
11:21 to play.
R-MC scored seven of the next nine points and was able to jump
out to an eight point edge when Kevin Voelkel converted a
three-point play, making the score 67-59 with just over eight
minutes to go in the game.
RC responded with a mini 7-2 run, cutting its deficit to one
point on a Cory Poindexter trifecta with 4:44 remaining in the
contest.
With the Jackets up 77-76 with 1:22 to play, Voelkel took a pass
from Jones and scored to extend the lead to three. The Maroons then
made one of two free throws on its ensuing possession to pull
within two, but R-MC would convert six-of-eight chances from the
charity stripe in the final 31 seconds to seal the win.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action Saturday when it travels
to Lynchburg for a 3:00 ODAC match up. Roanoke will travel to
Hampden-Sydney on February 11th at 7:00 p.m.
