Strong Defense Helps R-MC Men 's Basketball Bounce

ASHLAND, VA - Randolph-Macon scored 33 of the
first 40 points of the game as the Yellow Jackets raced past
visiting Randolph College 78-45 Saturday afternoon in Ashland.
R-MC (13-4 / 7-1) used a stifling defense that
allowed just two field goals over the first 13:37 of play, helping
the Jackets open up the 33-7 advantage. Randolph-Macon would allow
just six field goals in the first period and forced 11 turnovers. A
Jordan Brown put back layup as the horn sounded sent R-MC to the
locker room with a 41-19 edge.
The Yellow Jackets continued to build on their
lead, opening up the second-half with a 12-3 run, taking a 53-22
advantage after a pair of free-throws from Danny Jones. R-MC's lead
would stretch to as many as 43 in the second stanza it
secured its 12th win in its last 13 games.
The Jackets had four players in double figures
led by Justin Short who had 12 points in the win. Calvin Croskey
matched his career-high with 11 points, while Jones added 11 points
off the bench as well. As a team, the R-MC reserves outscored the
Randolph bench 42-7. Brandon Braxton scored 10 points
in the win as well. Boris Varela and Jordan Brown grabbed eight and
seven rebounds, respectively, helping R-MC to a 45-31 edge on the
glass.
Derrick Woods-Morrow who had a game-high 21
points and 11 boards in a losing effort paced Randolph (2-14 / 0-9
ODAC). The WildCats, who were making their first appearance in
Crenshaw Gym, were held to 30.9% shooting, making 17-of-55 attempts
from the field.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action when it
hits the road on Wednesday and travels to Washington and Lee for a
7:00 p.m. ODAC game.
