R-MC's Late Surge Falls Short, Guilford Prevails
4-3
(Box
Score)
ASHLAND, VA - The Yellow Jackets scored three goals in final
last twelve minutes of play against Guilford on Saturday. However,
R-MC could not overcome a four-goal deficit, falling to the Quakers
4-3.
Although R-MC outshot Guilford 12-4 in the first stanza, the
Yellow Jackets could not manage to score on Quaker goalkeeper Peter
Truitt. The freshman netminder registered eight saves in the first
forty-five minutes of play and carried a 3-0 lead into halftime.
After Guilford stretched its lead to four goals in the
sixty-fifth minute, the Yellow Jackets stormed back. R-MC senior
Scott Landolt put the Yellow Jackets on the board with an
unassisted tally in the seventh-ninth minute. Eight minutes later,
Landolt struck again, this time setting up Jon Fernandez to pull
R-MC within two goals of Guilford.
R-MC continued to pressure the Quaker cage. Forty seconds
after Fernandez scored, senior Rick Hebert deposited a rebound to
tally the Yellow Jacket's third goal in seventeen minutes. Trailing
by just one goal, R-MC continued to control the ball in front of
the Quaker cage. However, Guilford avoided the tie by sending one
last clear out of its box with ten seconds remaining.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Quakers 21-8. R-MC goalkeeper
Matty Rocawich made two saves, while Truitt recorded eleven stops
for Guilford.
R-MC returns to play on Wednesday when the Yellow Jackets travel
to Roanoke to take on the Maroons. Game time is slated for 7:00.
