ASHLAND, VA - Johns Hopkins' Andrew Case rushed
for 95 yards on 24 carries and scored what proved to be the
game-winning touchdown as the Blue Jays topped home standing
Randolph-Macon 39-31 in triple overtime Saturday afternoon in
Ashland.
After Kase rushed for 20 yards in JHU's (2-0) game-winning drive,
quarterback Hewitt Tomlin hit Brian Hopkins for a two-point
conversion pass to put the Blue Jays in front 39-31. R-MC (0-2)
took the ensuing possession and drove down to the six-yard line
before quarterback Austin Faulkner was intercepted by Mike Mahon on
third down to seal the win for Johns Hopkins.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to and two score
lead when Eric Dardozzi picked off Tomlin on JHU's second
possession and ran the ball back 21-yards for the game's first
score. On R-MC's next offensive possession, Jackets starter Brandon
Braner connected with tight-end Stuart May for a 69-yard scoring
strike to make the game 14-0 in favor of R-MC.
The score remained that way until halfway
through the second quarter, when Hopkins started a drive on its own
23-yard line with 14:10 to go in the half. The Blue Jays managed to
eat up 8:09 and were aided by two R-MC penalties on third down to
extend the drive as they went 77 yards in 18 plays to make the
score 14-7 at the intermission.
JHU cashed in on a fumble recovery on R-MC's
opening possession of the first half and tied the game when Tomlin
hit Sean Hennesey on a 25-yard pass to tie the game 14-14.
Johns Hopkins took the lead 21-14 after Tyler
Brown, sacked Braner, forced the ball loose and managed to scoop
the ball up and score from 22-yards out.
Following the touchdown, Faulkner was inserted
under center for R-MC and promptly led the Jackets on a 12 play, 85
yard scoring drive that was capped off by Faulkner throwing an 11
yard touchdown pass to Alex Ramirez to tie the game at 21 all.
In the first overtime, the teams exchanged field
goals to make the score 24-24. R-MC grabbed a 31-24 advantage in
the second OT when Faulkner hit Braner, who was inserted at wide
out, on a fade pattern in the corner of the end zone. The lead was
short lived as the Blue Jays took just two plays on its possession
to get the equalizer and tie the score 31-31.
