Three-goal Second Half Lifts Lynchburg Past R-MC, 3-1
( Box
Score )
ASHLAND, VA - After senior captain Kevan Quinn scored
a goal in the forty-eighth minute of what may have been his last
collegiate soccer game on the campus of Randolph-Macon, Lynchburg
rattled off three goals in a twenty-minute span to knock off the
Yellow Jackets 3-1.
After a scoreless first stanza, R-MC took a 1-0 early in the
second half. Jon Fernandez found Quinn, who slipped a shot past the
Hornets keeper. The ball hit the inside of the left post,
ricocheting into the cage. Less than six minutes later, the Hornets
tied the match with a tally of their own. The Lynchburg scoring
attack did not stop there. In the sixty-first minute, Hornet Hunter
Smith sent a bicycle kick into the top right corner of the R-MC
cage for the eventual game-winning goal. Lynchburg added a third
tally in the seventy-fourth minute to seal the victory.
R-MC keeper Jason DePre collected two shots, while Lynchburg's
Matt Sturdivant made nine saves.
Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets will still earn a spot in
the ODAC Tournament. R-MC will grab either the seventh or eight
seed, depending on the outcome of the Eastern Mennonite vs. Emory
& Henry match tonight.
R-MC will travel to either Roanoke or Lynchburg on Saturday for
the quarterfinal matchup.
