About Day Field/Old Day Field

  • In 1937, RMC faculty member Dr. Frank Day donated property to the north of campus across Patrick Street from Alumni Gymnasium that was used for athletic fields. Day Field was the home of Yellow Jacket football until the completion of New Day Field.

    Football's History


    On November 25th, 2023, RMC won their 17th consecutive home game at Day Field with a 46-0 win over Ithaca in the second round of the NCAA football championships.  RMC also hosted their first ever playoff semi-final in the 2023 season. On November 19, 2022, RMC won their 10th consecutive home game at Day Field with a 35-28 victory over SUNY Cortland in the first round of the NCAA football championships. This win was not only the first time in school history that the Yellow Jackets hosted a home playoff, but the win marked RMC’s 11th overall win, which is the most in a season in school history. RMC has posted three undefeated home seasons in the history of Day field (2016,2020,2022), only having one losing season at home (2015) in the 10 years Day Field has been opened. In 2023, RMC hosted three playoff games at Day Field, hosting CNU, Ithaca, and SUNY Cortland. The game against Cortland came as RMC's first appearance in the National Semifinal. In 2024, RMC hosted Washington & Jefferson in the second round of the NCAA Football Tournament, a 38-22 win.

    Heading into the 2024 season, Randolph-Macon is 54-15 all-time at Day Field since the debut of the complex in the 2012 season. The first ever win on Day Field came as a 21-6 defensive battle of Averett on September 8, 2012. 
     

    Men's Lacrosse History

     
    Randolph-Macon Men's Lacrosse played their first game on Day Field on March 5, 2013 against Greensboro, defeating the Pride 20-10. The Yellow Jackets have mounted a home record of 63-40 for a winning percentage of .612 on Day Field. RMC has been perfect at home one time, going 3-0 at home in the 2020 shortened season that helped propel the Yellow Jackets to a 7-0 start to a season that was ended due to COVID. The Yellow Jackets defeated nationally ranked Lynchburg 13-9 on April 19, 2023 on Day Field, noted as one of the best wins for the men’s lacrosse team on Day Field since the facility opened in 2012.

    Women's Lacrosse History

     
    Randolph-Macon Women's Lacrosse played their first game on Day Field on February 13, 2013 against Catholic, defeating the Cardinals 15-11. The Yellow Jackets have boasted a home record of 63-35 for a winning percentage of .643 on Day Field.

    The facility has played host to the 2019 NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse final four that saw Middlebury defeat Salisbury 14-9 for the national championship. Day Field has accumulated a 175-89 (.663) record between all three sports that are in competition at the facility. Across all three sports, RMC went a combined 21-5 at Day Field in 2024.
