ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon Women's Volleyball will feature a home Invitational as well as a trip west to Colorado Springs in 2019. The schedule was revealed by head coach Bill Rogers Tuesday afternoon.
"We have a veteran team playing a tough schedule," Rogers said. "I expect we will be seasoned by the time the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament comes around."
Randolph-Macon begins the season at the Virginia Wesleyan Invitation in Virginia Beach where the Yellow Jackets will open the season with Wesley, Pitt-Bradford and St. Mary's (Md.) in the first weekend of play. R-MC continues the early-season travel sweep with a contest at Mary Washington.
The Yellow Jackets then return home for one of its biggest Invitationals in recent memory. R-MC invites Marymount, Susquehanna, Salisbury and Averett to Ashland to play on Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7. A full tournament schedule will be available prior to the R-MC Invitational.
From there, R-MC doesn't play a single September contest on the road, seeing Johns Hopkins in non-conference play and Randolph and Eastern Mennonite in conference play, all at Crenshaw Gym. The Yellow Jackets finish the month with a quad-match in Ashland. Guilford and Emory & Henry will visit Crenshaw and Alumni gyms to face R-MC and Virginia Wesleyan.
The home-heavy September gives way to a road-favored October. The Yellow Jackets open the month with Washington and Lee in Lexington and travel to Hollins and Virginia Wesleyan.
R-MC then heads west to face a group of unique opponents at the Pikes Peak Challenge, hosted by Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. While in the Rockies, R-MC will face Johnson & Wales Denver, hosts Colorado College, DePauw and Illinois College. One note about these matches -- the schedule online has already accounted for play in a different time zone with all times being Eastern Standard Time.
The Yellow Jackets return from Colorado for a home conference tilt with Lynchburg before facing Roanoke and Ferrum in a tri-match hosted by the Panthers. R-MC also travels to Bridgewater for a conference match during the following week.
The road trip continues with participation in the Wid Guisler Invitational in Huntingdon, Pa on Saturday, October 26. The tournament, hosted by Juniata, will see the Yellow Jackets face the hosting Eagles as well as Arcadia. Juniata was a national semifinalist last year.
The home slate will then conclude against Shenandoah on Wednesday, October 30, which will mark Senior Day for the Yellow Jackets.
R-MC gets one more road trip in during the first days of November as R-MC heads to Atlanta to face Wittenberg, Berry and Birmingham-Southern in the Emory National Invitational.
"This will be a fun and challenging season playing as diverse a group of teams as we have ever seen," Rogers added.
Outside of the aforementioned Juniata team, ten other squads participated in the NCAA Division III Tournament last season, including all three at the Emory National Invitational and two at the Pikes Peak Challenge.
"The schedule is tough and full of NCAA qualified teams," Rogers said. "We have the talent and depth to play tough teams. This should help our strength of schedule and seeding if we are lucky enough to make the NCAA tournament. My hope is that our out-of-conference schedule will help us come back to the ODAC stronger and ready to compete."
The Yellow Jackets get started on Friday, August 30 against Wesley in Virginia Beach at 5:00 PM. See the full schedule here.
