Birmingham Southern Gets The Best Of Women’s Volleyball 3-0; Clark & Hall named to All-Tournament Team

ATLANTA, Ga. – Senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va. / Kettle Run) and sophomore Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va. / James River) each had ten kills, but it was not enough for the Yellow Jackets in their match with Birmingham Southern as R-MC lost 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-19). BSC (18-7, 11-3 SAA) shot .215 on the match, while R-MC shot .133 on the afternoon.

In set one, R-MC jumped out to the quick lead at 3-1 before BSC got the points back at a 3-3 tie. R-MC again took the lead, fighting to the 12-7 advantage. R-MC got the lead to 22-13 when BSC found seven points in a row, taking the score to 22-20 in R-MC's favor. R-MC had set point at 24-22 when BSC found another four in a row to take the set 24-26.

The two teams battled in the second set, trading the lead and ties. R-MC had leads at 4-3 and 5-4 while BSC battled back to get ties at 6-6 and 7-7.  R-MC got back out to the lead with an 11-9 advantage before the Panthers got the tie again at 11 apiece. The Yellow Jackets went down 12-13 before they pulled a tie back together at 13-13 and again at 15-15 and 16-16. The teams traded until R-MC took the 22-20 lead, but again BSC fired off the last five points of the match, winning 25-22.

Set three started out with 1-1 and 3-3 ties. But the Panthers would not surrender the lead from then on, building leads of four and six. Randolph-Macon was able to go on a three-point run and bring the set within two points to 14-16. But BSC fired off another four points to go up 14-20. The Yellow Jackets would not get any leads back as the Panthers won the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

In addition to McGilvery and Wolfe's ten, junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va. / Riverheads) and sophomore Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) had seven kills and six kills respectively. Clark and Hall were named to the Emory National Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Angela Tender (Manassas, Va. / Stone Bridge) led the team with 17 assists while senior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) added 13. Quinn also led the team in digs, along with McGilvery who each tallied ten. Senior libero Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) also added eight digs to the match.

At the net, R-MC had a good performance. Junior Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) led the team with six blocks, including one solo block. Clark, McGilvery, Wolfe and senior Colleen Beaver each added two as well.

#1 Randolph-Macon will face #8 Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC Quarterfinals in Ashland on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. R-MC has won the conference tournament two years in a row, while it has been the regular season champion four years in a row (A previous article mistakenly identified R-MC as only winning the regular season three years in a row). R-MC finishes the regular season at 20-6 overall and 11-0 in ODAC play.
