
ASHLAND, Va. – Second-seeded Randolph-Macon bowed out of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament to seventh-seeded Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday afternoon 5-1. The match, which was played to decision, ends the team's season with a final record of 12-4.
#1 duo of junior Gaby Tersigni (Yorktown, Va. / York) and sophomore Kristin Dantzler (Williamsburg, Va. / York) fought with the VWU #1 pair of Makayla Velic and Audrey Bally. Tersigni and Dantzler were able to secure the tie 7-7, but Velic and Bally took the needed two game to win the set and match 9-7.
In #2 doubles, junior Stephanie Yeager (Fairfax, Va. / Robinson Secondary) and freshman Olivia Uzer (McLean, Va. / Langley) was close to the VWU pair, Katie Stamen and Kellen Phillips the entire match, but the Marlins edged the two out by the score 8-6 as well.
In #3 doubles, Virginia Wesleyan got the upper hand early. VWU's Kristina Sabelstrom and Taylor Witherspoon came from behind against senior Sarah Hinson (Nashville, N.C. / Northern Nash) and sophomore Landon Aud (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial). The Randolph-Macon pair went up 4-1 early, but ceded to the VWU duo late as the Marlins got the win 8-6.
Down 3-0 heading into singles, Randolph-Macon needed to win a majority of singles matches to pull out the overall victory.
But the Marlins kept the pressure on. Uzer was bested by Courtney Simmons 6-1, 6-0.
Needing a sweep from then on, Dantzler got the first win of the afternoon for R-MC. She defeated Staman 6-1, 6-0.
But VWU got the match victory as Sabelstrom defeated Hinson 6-0, 6-3.
With the completion of the season, Randolph-Macon closes out with its fifth winning record in a row.
