Former R-MC All-American pitcherTravis Beazley is in his first season as a full-time assistant onRay Hedrick's staff.
Beazley comes back to Ashland afterfour seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization. Over thosefour seasons, Beazley started 66 games, logging close to 370innings on the mound between short-season A and AA levels. Hewas twice named California League Pitcher of the Week (2007,2008). Reoccurring arm injuries forced Travis into an earlyretirement this past May.
The Red Sox took the Beaverdamnative in the 38th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball AmateurDraft, following a standout career on the diamond and in theclassroom for the Jackets.
As a senior, Beazley’snumbers included a program single-season record 108 strikeouts, a1.94 earned run average, and a 9-3 record in 88.0 innings pitched.He struck out an ODAC and R-MC single-game-record 17 batters in theseason finale against Newport News Apprentice School, picking up a9-2 win in 8.2 innings, and also broke the school career strikeoutrecord that day, finishing with 216. His nine victories tied theprogram’s record for wins in a season.
Beazley was first in the ODAC instrikeouts and innings pitched, tied for first in wins and gamesstarted (12), and second in opponent-low batting average (.224). Inthe NCAA, he was ranked ninth in victories and 16th in strikeoutsper nine innings. On the R-MC team, Beazley was first in earned runaverage, opponent-low batting average, wins, innings pitched,strikeouts and games started. Offensively, Beazley batted ateam-leading .378 (34-for-90), with five doubles, three triples,one home run and 22 RBIs, and also had four stolen bases and scored23 runs.
For his efforts, Beazley was namedan American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings DivisionIII second-team All-American for the 2006 season. He was alsonamed the ABCA/Rawlings Division III South Region Pitcher of theYear, first-team all-region and first-team all-state by theVirginia Sports Information Directors, Beazley was the 2006 ODACPitcher of the Year and first-team all-conference as a pitcher, aswell as second-team all-ODAC as a third baseman.
As a junior in 2005, Beazley was named first-team all-ODAC,honorable mention all-state, and honorable mention all-South Regionas a third baseman. He was also the conference Pitcher of the Weekonce last season.
To go along with his athletichonors this year, Beazley was also named a College SportsInformation Directors/ESPN The Magazine first-team District 3college division all-academic selection as a senior. Hemajored in business/economics, and graduated fromRandolph-Macon with a final cumulative grade point average of 3.53.Beazley was a Dean’s List student at R-MC, a member of theODAC all-academic squad, and a R-MC Presidential Scholarshiprecipient.
