Chip Bailey is in his ninth year as an assistant softball coach at Randolph-Macon College. His educational career consisted of more than 36 years as a teacher, coach and guidance counselor in the Richmond City School System.
During his career, Bailey has coached high school baseball at Marshall-Walker and Huguenot in the city, and Monacan in Chesterfield County. He was an assistant softball coach at James River and Patrick Henry High Schools. Bailey had the pleasure of heading the St. Gertrude team in 2001, and led them to a local Independent School Championship. His three regional softball District Five Championships paved the way for his love of fastpitch softball.
From 1995-2007, he was actively involved as the primary assistant coach for the Richmond-based Sports Plus 18U travel softball team. This team won numerous ASA tournaments, and he coached a large number of players who went on to play college softball.
Bailey’s opportunity to coach college softball arrived in 2007 at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. He spent four years as assistant coach and helped develop many All-Conference and two All-American players. CNU’s record of 145-39 from 2007-2010 demonstrates the success of this nationally known program. The 2010 campaign concluded with a fourth-place finish in the Division III World Series in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Assisting head coach Kevin Proffitt during the past eight years, he has helped to mold the R-MC program. Actively recruiting and teaching new players is his major attribute. Winning the first 2015 ODAC Championship was such a special feeling, especially for the R-MC student-athletes.
Coach Bailey continues to help youngsters with hitting lessons, and is available for clinics with travel and school-age teams. Coach Bailey's wife, Shelley, passed away in November of 2018 due to pancreatic cancer. She fought a courageous battle.
