No. 4 Softball Shuts Out WildCats

Savannah Wood Sliding

LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 4 Randolph-Macon shut out the Randolph WildCats Monday afternoon in the final regular season contest for both teams. Randolph-Macon finishes its season 37-3 and 16-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, which is not only the team's best regular season win total, but also the program's best total numbers of wins in history.

Freshmen pitchers Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River) and Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va. / Lee-Davis) got the victories for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) batted in three runs while sophomore Sami Davidson (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) went 3-5 on the afternoon with two runs scored.

Randolph-Macon 5, Randolph 0

Randolph-Macon got just two hits before the seventh inning, but the final inning was where R-MC exploded. Junior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va. / Patrick Henry) led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. She came home after senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va. / Brunswick) singled to left field, scoring the RBI and the first run of the game.

Junior Sarah Cimring (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) took Jones' place on the base paths and advanced to second as Davidson was issued a walk. A Randolph error loaded the bases for R-MC as sophomore Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's) became the beneficiary of the WildCat miscue. Rhoads stepped up to bat and sent a single through the left side moving all the runners including Cimring home. Sanderford singled as well, this time down the left field line as Davidson and Hill scored and Rhoads pulled in at second.

Sophomore Chelsea Land (Danville, Va. / Chatham) pinch ran for Rhoads from there and came home from second after junior Casey Abernethy (Prince George, Va. / Prince George) reached on an error. R-MC ended the inning with a pair of outs, but not before five runs had crossed the plate.

Rhoads closed the bottom of the seventh with a groundout, a fielder's choice and a pop out. She fanned seven in the game total and earned her 12th win of the season, eight of which have been shutouts.

Sanderford tallied two RBIs while going 1-3 while Jones and Rhoads each tallied one RBI and each going 1-3.

Randolph-Macon 6, Randolph 0

Like the afternoon's earlier game, one inning opened the flood gates for Randolph-Macon, though it was earlier in the contest – the top of the fourth inning.

Junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va. / Essex) hit a one-out double and pulled into third on the throw. Jones hit her home with a single to left field.

With Jones aboard, Davidson singled to give the Yellow Jackets two runners on. Hill loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch. Scott sent Jones home as she reached base on an error. The next batter, Sanderford, put the ball in play as well, earning an RBI, as Davidson came home to score. Hill then stole home as Sanderford stole second.  R-MC had tallied four runs in the inning to go up 4-0.

R-MC added two more in the fifth. Whittemore reached base on an error and was hit to second by Wood, who singled to center field. Jones loaded the bases for R-MC with a single. Davidson kept R-MC going with another single, which scored Whittemore. The next batter, Hill, sacrificed herself to send Wood home on a fly ball, adding to R-MC's total as the Yellow Jackets ended the inning with a pair of runs to go up 6-0, which ended up being the final tally.

Scott got the win with the complete game shutout, striking out ten -- including two of the final three batters -- and did not allow a single walk.

Wood went 2-4 with two runs scored while Jones was 2-3 with an RBI and a run.
