HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Shane Berry (Midlothian, Va. / James River) and sophomore Grant Sarver (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) got singles victories at Hampden-Sydney Sunday afternoon, but the Tigers took the match 7-2 in a conference meeting. R-MC fell to 8-6 and 4-4 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while H-SC went to 11-5 and 5-2 in the ODAC.
Sarver beat William Driskill 6-4, 6-0 in #2 singles to earn his ninth overall singles victory this season. All nine wins have come in the #2 singles spot.
Berry won his eighth match as well, including his second from #5 singles. He faced a tough first set, losing it 7-6 on the 7-1 tie-break. But Berry bounced back, winning set two 6-1. Then in a ten-point tie-break, he won 10-4 in the third set.
But H-SC got seven other wins on the day, including all three doubles matches. #1 duo senior Baxter Carter (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's School) and freshman Alex Hein (Windermere, Fla. / Windermere Preparatory School) lost 8-2 to Matthew and Michael Moody. Sarver and freshman Erik Moulton got a few more victories, but also eventually lost to Driskill and Levy Young 8-4. Berry and fellow junior Jacob Haines (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) lost in #3 doubles to Clark Cummings and Grayson Burns 8-3.
In singles, Haines lost in the #1 spot to Matthew Moody 6-0, 6-1.
Hein had one of the toughest fights all afternoon in #3 singles. He won the first set 6-4. But his opponent Michael Moody won the last two, winning 6-2 and winning a third set tie-break 10-5.
In #4 singles, Moulton lost to Cummings 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Jack Aprahamian (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) closed the singles competition out, though H-SC also got the win in #6 singles 6-2, 6-2.
Randolph-Macon will face Guilford at home on Wednesday at 4:00 PM. The team will recognize Carter as the lone senior on this year's squad.
