Moore Scores 22 as R-MC Nips Ferrum 69-67

ASHLAND, Va. - Senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) scored 22 points to lead the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team past Ferrum 69-67 Saturday afternoon in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

Moore hit 8 of 13 field goals, a pair of three pointers and 4 of 5 free throws. He also had five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 36 minutes.

Three of the first four field goals for the Yellow Jackets were three-pointers as R-MC built an 11-2 lead in the first 4:20. The Panthers used an 8-2 spurt to cut the deficit to three at 13-11 midway through the period. Moore scored seven straight for R-MC as the lead grew back to seven at 22-15 with 5:40 remaining in the half. A jumper by junior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) gave the Yellow Jackets a 10-point cushion at 25-15 with 4:00 left in the period. Four straight free throws by Ferrum cut it to six at 25-19 with 3:00 left before R-MC closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 34-21 lead at intermission. Moore had 12 points, two assists and two steals in the first half. He went 5 for 6 from the floor, including 2 for 3 on three-pointers.

The Panthers started the second half on a 13-3 run to narrow the gap to three at 37-34 with 15:30 remaining. R-MC led 39-36 before a pair of three-pointers from sophomore Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) sparked a 10-0 run to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 49-36 with 11:30 left. The margin went to 14 before a 10-2 spurt by Ferrum made it 59-53 with 4:44 remaining. The Panthers pulled within two at 67-65 with 36 seconds left. Taylor hit a free throw with 31 seconds remaining to make it a three-point game at 68-65. Moore grabbed the rebounds on a missed three by the Panthers. Junior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) sank a foul shot with five seconds left before Ferrum hit a layup at the buzzer to make the final 69-67.

Taylor finished with 15 points and paced the Yellow Jackets with eight rebounds as R-MC held a 35-21 advantage on the boards. Wilson had 11 points and led R-MC with five assists.

KeAndre' Robinson (Richmond, Va./Glen Allen) paced the Panthers with 24 poiints.

Randolph-Macon breaks for final exams before returning to action on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at William Peace.
