Series vs. Shenandoah

R-MC is 12-3 all-time against Shenandoah. The Yellow Jackets have won four straight and 12 of the past 13 meetings after the Hornets claimed the first two encounters.   R-MC has averaged more than 44 points in the past four wins vs. SU. R-MC is 6-2 at home and 6-1 on the road against the Hornets. Last fall, the Yellow Jackets posted a 45-14 win over the Hornets in Ashland.  R-MC outscored SU 52-38 in its most recent trip to Winchester on March 19, 2021.

Last Time Out

R-MC collected 473 yards of total offense, with 384 on the ground, and the Yellow Jacket defense held Shenandoah to 38 rushing yards in a 45-14 ODAC victory.

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets took the opening kickoff and drove 61 yards in nine plays, as Justin DeLeon scored on a three-yard run as R-MC took a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.
  • R-MC held SU to a three-and-out, but a muffed punt gave the Hornets the ball on the RMC 29. A TD pass on the next play tied it at 7-7.
  • The Yellow Jackets took the ensuing kickoff and moved 70 yards in 10 plays, with DeLeon reaching the end zone from one yard out as R-MC went up 14-7 with 3:26 left in the first period.
  • Chris Vidal hit a 31-yard field goal with 6:21 left in the second quarter as the lead grew to 17-7.
  • Nick Hale broke tackles for a 37-yard TD run late in the second period as the Yellow Jackets led 24-7 at halftime.
  • DeLeon delivered his third touchdown of the game late in the third quarter to give R-MC a 31-7 advantage.
  • Presley Egbers scored from seven yards out five minutes into the final period to give the home team a 38-7 lead.
  • Following an interception by Ricky Thompson, the Yellow Jackets moved 65 yards in 10 plays, with Aaron Acevedo reaching the end zone from one yard out as R-MC went up 45-7.
  • The Hornets had the game's final TD with 19 seconds left to make the final score 45-14.

By The Numbers

  • R-MC had 68 rushes for 384 yards. DeLeon had 21 carries for 111 yards and three TDs. Egbers rushed 11 times for 71 yards and one score. Kwesi Clark ran 11 times for 68 yards. Acevedo carried 10 times for 64 yards and one TD. Hale had 10 carries for 59 yards and one score.
  • The Yellow Jackets held the ball for a season-high 44:12.
  • R-MC did not punt in the contest.

Last Time Out

Drew Campanale completed all 17 of his pass attempts to break a conference record with three passing touchdowns and one on the ground as R-MC defeated previously unbeaten Bridgewater 44-7.

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards in eight plays, with Campanale hitting Joey Hunt on a 14-yard scoring strike to put R-MC up 7-0 less than five minutes in.
  • The R-MC defense forced a three-and-out, and Campanale capped a seven-play scoring drive with a 25-yard TD run to make it 14-0 with 4:24 left in the first period.
  • The Eagles would put their lone scoring drive together to close within seven at 14-7 with 11:19 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Yellow Jackets answered with a 78-yard scoring drive in eight plays, as Campanale found David Wallis in the end zone on a fourth-and-six play from the BC 16 to put the home team up 21-7 with six minutes left until halftime.
  • Following an Eagle punt, R-MC moved 80 yards in eight plays as Tyler Graham nailed a 24-yard field goal late in the second period as the Yellow Jackets led 24-7 at the break.
  • BC drove to midfield on its first possession of the second half but was stopped on fourth down. Nick Hale scored from 13 yards out as the lead grew to 30-7 with 8:45 left in the third.
  • Kwasi Clarke had a 39-yard touchdown run as the Yellow Jackets took a 37-7 advantage with 3:21 left in the third.
  • Campanale hit Holden Hodge on a 30-yard TD pass in the final period to make the final score 44-7.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had 473 yards of total offense, with 264 through the air and 209 on the ground.
  • Campanale went 17-17 for 256 yards. As a team, R-MC went 18 for 18 for 264 yards.

Stingy Against the Run

R-MC is first in the country in rushing defense, allowing 27.0 yards per game on the ground. Bridgewater had 55 yards a week ago. Averett had 40 rushing yards against R-MC. The Yellow Jackets held Guilford to minus-30 yards on the ground on 28 carries. R-MC held Southern Virginia to 62 rushing yards after keeping Catholic to 35 rushing yards. R-MC held NC Wesleyan to zero net rushing yards in the opener, the fourth-best effort in Division III during Week 1. The Battling Bishops gained rushing 26 yards and also lost 26 yards on the ground.

Campanale Offensive Player of the Week

Drew Campanale was named ODAC Offensive Player of the Week for his work against Bridgewater. He completed all 17 of his pass attempts for 256 yards and three passing touchdowns. Campanale carried the ball four times for 35 yards, including a 25-yard TD run in the second quarter.

 

Potent Passing

R-MC moved up to second in the nation in completion percentage at .767 after going 18 for 18 against BC. Four signal-callers have combined to connect on 99 of 129 passes. The Yellow Jackets are first in the ODAC and fourth in the country in team passing efficiency at 190.7. Drew Campanale leads Division III in completion percentage at .788. He has completed 21 consecutive pass attempts over the past two games. Campanale has completed 82 of 104 passes for 1,114 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception. He is tops in the conference and third in the country in passing efficiency at 201.2. Campanale is fifth in the nation with 10.6 yards per pass attempt.

 

Rushing Offense

The Yellow Jackets are second in the league and ninth in the nation in rushing offense at 269.7 yards per game. Kwesi Clarke is third in the ODAC in rushing with 84.3 yards per game and Nick Hale is fifth at 72.8 yards per contest. Clarke is first in the conference and 13th in the country in rushing yards per carry at 7.23, while Hale is second in the league and 17th in the nation at 7.00. No other team in Division III has multiple players in the top 20 in rushing yards per carry.

 

Time of Possession

R-MC is second in the ODAC and eighth in the nation in time of possession at 34:14. The Yellow Jackets have had the advantage in time of possession in each of the first six games this season.

 

Total Offense

R-MC is second in the ODAC and 18th in the country in total offense at 486.7 yards per game.

Pile up the Points

R-MC is first in the ODAC and ninth in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 47.3 points per contest. The Yellow Jackets have scored at least 40 points in their first six games for the first time in program history. R-MC scored at least 40 points in the first four contests in 1968 and 2010.

The Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 144-14 in the second half, including 63-0 in the fourth quarter.

 

Strong on Third Down

Plead the Fourth

R-MC is first in the ODAC and ninth in the nation in fourth down conversion percentage defense at .143. Opponents have been successful on two of 14 fourth-down plays.

 

Sacks Appeal

Sophomore defensive tackle Wade Grubbs leads the Yellow Jackets with 7.5 quarterback sacks. He is ninth in the nation with 1.50 sacks per contest.

  

Quite a Catch

David Wallis is first in the ODAC and 10th nationally with 26.3 yards per catch.

 

Deaver Defensive Player of the Week

Jackson Deaver was named ODAC Defensive Player of the Week as well as to the D3football.com National Team of the Week for his performance in the win over Guilford. He tied for the team lead with eight tackles. He had 5.5 tackles for loss (minus-27 yards) and a pair of QB sacks for a loss of 13 yards. Deaver contributed to a defense that held the Quakers to minus-30 yards rushing on 28 carries.

 

Ihle Offensive Player of the Week

Andrew Ihle was named ODAC Offensive Player of the Week. He rushed for a career-best 83 yards and five rushing touchdowns in the win over Guilford. Coming off the bench, Ihle had two scores in the second quarter to help erase a 13-6 deficit. He reached the end zone twice in the third period and added a 13-yard TD run in the fourth quarter as R-MC outscored the Quakers 28-0 after halftime.

 

Five Touchdowns on the Ground

Andrew Ihle had five rushing touchdowns in the victory over Guilford. He was the first Yellow Jacket to run for five scores since Eric Hoy had five rushing touchdowns in a 56-28 victory on Nov. 11, 2017. It was one away from the program record. Howard Stevens holds the program record with six rushing touchdowns against Western Maryland (now McDaniel) in 1969. Stevens rushed for 317 yards in the game, also a school record.
