Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville) scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as No. 16 Randolph-Macon defeated Penn State Abington in the first round of the Radisson Invitational at Scranton's Long Center.
Simon was one of six Yellow Jackets (1-0) to score in double figures in the season opener. Junior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) led the way with 19 points, including hitting four of five three-pointers. Sullivan also had five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Junior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) tallied 13, junior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) tallied 12 points and eight boards, sophomore Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) recorded 11 points and sophomore Braeshaun Dozier (Winston-Salem, N.C./Ronald Reagan) chipped in 10.
Junior Trent Walker (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) led the squad with six assists to go along with his eight points and six rebounds.
Simon scored on a traditional three-point play one minute into the contest as R-MC never trailed in the contest. The Yellow Jackets used a 14-2 run in the first half to take a 34-18 lead with 6:30 left in the first half. R-MC took a 47-38 advantage to the locker room at halftime.
The Nittany Lions scored the first nine points of the second half to knot the score at 47-47. The Yellow Jackets led by eight at 84-76 with six minutes remaining before closing the game on a 25-10 spurt to make the final 109-86.
R-MC hit 50.7% from the floor (36-71) and 47.6% from behind the arc (10-21). The Yellow Jackets hit 27 of 34 free throws for 79.4%.
Randolph-Macon held a 48-32 advantage on the boards.
The Yellow Jackets will face host Scranton in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. The Royals topped Immaculata 95-76 in the second opening-round contest.
