Box Score ST. MARY'S, MD – Randolph-Macon
shot 7-for-12 from three in the second half to get past Franklin
& Marshall 73-65 and head to the school's first NCAA
Division III Final Four.
R-MC
improved to 26-6 on the year and joined the 1976-77 Yellow Jackets,
which made it to the National Championship game as a member of
Division II, as the only R-MC men's squads to advance to the
Final Four.
A see-saw
first half saw the Yellow Jackets shoot just 9-of-25 from the
field, but hold a 28-27 advantage at the break, thanks to eight
points by Erich Pugh and 10 points from their bench.
Franklin
& Marshall's Mike Baker knocked down a jumper with 1:11
to go in the first half and R-MC headed into the intermission with
28-27 advantage.
A Danny
Jones layup with 12:44 to go gave Randolph-Macon their largest lead
of the game at 47-39.
The
Diplomats then responded with a 7-0 spurt to pull within one point
on a foul shot by Anthony Brooks
Calvin Croskey knocked down a three pointer
at the 10:32 mark of the second half, sparking an 11-2 Yellow
Jackets' run that was later capped by Jordan Brown who
knocked down a three of his own to put R-MC up 58-48 with 7:50
left.
Randolph-Macon went up by
11 on Pugh three with just over five minutes remaining in the
contest.
The
Diplomats began to chip away at the R-MC lead, pulling within three
points at 68-65 on a Steve Tolliver trifecta with 32 seconds to
play.
Randolph-Macon held
Franklin & Marshall scoreless for the remained of the contest
and knocked down 5-of-6 free throws to pull away for the 73-65 win
and a berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament Final
Four.
Pugh
finished with a game high 23 points including a 5-for-7 mark from
the three point line and dishing out six assists. Jones joined Pugh
in double figures with 14 points and Croskey finished with
10.
F&M
were led by James McNally who had a team high 22 points and six
rebounds. Georgio Milligan and Mike Baker chipped in with 15 and 14
points respectively.
