Box Score ASHLAND, - VA - Trailing by 16
points with 12 minutes to play, No. 4 Randolph-Macon closed the
game on a 40-19 run to upend No. 10 Williams 79-74 in the
championship game of the 2009 R-MC Coaches Classic Sponsored by
Rees Jewelers Wednesday night in Ashland.
R-MC, which is ranked 4th in
the Nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll unvailed today, improves
to 10-0 on the season.
With the game tied at 31-31 with
2:40 to play in the first-half, Williams wrapped a 20-2 run around
half time and into the second half, taking a 51-35 advantage
on a dunk by Troy Whittington with 13:02 to play. A
pair of Nate Robertson free throws with 12:08 to go made the score
55-39 in favor of the Ephs.
A layup by Kevin Voelkel on R-MC's
ensuing possession sparked what proved to be a 17-4 run for the
Yellow Jackets that was capped by an Eric Pugh three-pointer to
pull Randolph-Macon within two at 58-56 with just under seven
minutes to play.
A Calvin Croskey three pointer with
5:16 left, put the Jackets out in front 61-60 for the first time in
the game. Two lead changes and two ties ensued before
Danny Jones converted one free-throw to give R-MC the lead for good
at 67-66 with 2:41 to play.
After a defensive stop, a Brandon
Braxton dunk extended the lead to 69-66 before a pair of Blake
Schultz free throws cut the Jackets advantage to 69-68 with 2:15 to
play.
From that point forward, R-MC made
all eight of its shots from the charity stripe to seal the game and
secure its third win this season over a ranked opponent.
Jones earned tournament most
outstanding player honors with a career-high 27 point
performance. Braxton and Pugh each had 13 in the win, while
all-tournament selection Croskey had 10 points in the victory as
well.
Williams (9-1) was paced by
all-tournament choice James Wang with 25 points and eight rebounds.
Fellow all-tournament selection Joe Geoghegan had 14 points and 12
boards in the loss.
Randolph-Macon will be back in
action on Monday when it returns to ODAC action with a road contest
at Bridgewater. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
