State
FROSTBURG, MD - The Randolph-Macon football team used a strong
defense and a series of key special teams plays to score a 23-19
non-conference road win at Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon.
R-MC has now won four in a row to up its record to 4-2 on the
season.
The Yellow Jackets blocked two extra points, a punt, recovered a
fumble for a touchdown and had an interception that led
directly to a score en route to the victory over the Bobcats.
FSU (0-6) got on the board first when quarterback Josh Volpe
connected with Christian Cook for a 19-yard scoring strike. R-MC
blocked the extra point and the Jackets' Scott Shope returned it
for two points, making the score 6-2 with 9:22 to go in the first
quarter.
The Bobcats capped a nine play, 47-yard drive with a one-yard
plunge by Volpe on the first play of the second quarter to go ahead
13-6.
R-MC cut the lead to 13-9 with just under seven minutes to go in
the first-half when Austin Faulkner found tight-end Ian Overstreet
on a five-yard, play action pass. The drive was set up by a key
interception by R-MC's Akeem Hardy.
The score remained that way through halftime and into the second
half before R-MC's Brandon Harrison took advantage of an FSU miscue
in the punting game, recovering a bad snap in the end zone for a
touchdown, putting the Jackets out in front 16-13.
The Bobcats took the lead back on its first-possession of the
fourth quarter; driving 60 yards on 10 plays, going ahead 19-16 on
a four yard scamper by Volpe. FSU's extra point attempt was blocked
by Jeremy Bowery, keeping it a one-possession game with 9:14 to go.
After R-MC's ensuing possession stalled, punter Ben Keyser
pinned FSU back on its own 15-yard line. The Jackets defense then
forced a Bobcat punt attempt that was blocked by Calvin Fleming and
returned to the one yard line by Brandon Easter, setting up a
quarterback sneak by Faulkner on the next play to give R-MC
the lead for good at 23-19.
Thaddeus Scruggs led the offense for R-MC with 66 yards on 15
carries. Christian Stahl made 10 tackles on the day, while Shope
had eight stops and Joe Pricone, Trey Haddon, Gamal Alwan and Jayrd
