McGilvery Guides R-MC Volleyball to 3-0 Win over VWU

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) led all players with 16 digs and was second with nine kills and 27 total attacks on Senior Night as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action Tuesday evening in Crenshaw Gym.

The Yellow Jackets (19-4, 11-0 ODAC) recorded wins of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-17 over the Marlins (16-9, 8-3 ODAC). R-MC went 11-0 in ODAC matches for the third consecutive season and have won 35 straight ODAC regular-season contests. The Yellow Jackets will be the No. 1 seed in next week's ODAC Tournament and will host a quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.

For the match, the Yellow Jackets had a hit percentage of .234, compared to .045 for VWU. Sophomore Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) paced the victors with 11 kills and 31 total attacks, while junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) added eight kills and 24 total attacks.

Senior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led R-MC with 15 assists, while sophomore Angela Tender (Manassas, Va./Stone Bridge) added 14. Senior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) registered 13 digs and five assists. Senior Colleen Beaver (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) recorded four

R-MC jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in Game 1 before VWU tallied six of the next nine points to take a 7-6 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored six straight to assume a 12-7 advantage. The Marlins put up two in a row before R-MC scored four in a row for a 16-9 lead. The margin grew to eight at 20-12 before VWU scored six in a row to cut it to two at 20-18. Following a timeout, the Yellow Jackets scored five of the final seven points to take the first game 25-20. The Yellow Jackets posted a hit percentage of .182, compared to .057 for the Marlins. Hall paced R-MC with five kills and 10 total attacks. Quinn and Tender both registered four assists, while Sallade had four of the Yellow Jackets' 15 digs.

VWU held a quick 2-1 lead in the second game before four straight points gave R-MC a 5-2 advantage. After the Marlins tallied two, the Yellow Jackets scored six in a row for an 11-4 lead. The edge grew to a dozen at 22-10 before R-MC finished with a 25-13 victory. The Yellow Jackets posted an Impressive .350 hit percentage, compared to .051 for VWU. McGilvery had six kills and 12 total attacks with no errors in Game 2, along with a team-leading seven digs. Quinn delivered seven assists.

R-MC would not trail in Game 3. The Yellow Jackets sprung to a 3-1 lead before the Marlins tied it at 3. R-MC scored four consecutive points to take a 7-3 advantage. With the home team holding an 8-5 lead, the Yellow Jackets put up six straight to go on top 14-5. The margin grew to 10 at 21-11 before R-MC recorded the 25-17 win. Clark had four kills and nine attacks, while Hall added three kills and 10 attacks. Tender tallied five assists and Quinn contributed four. McGilvery topped the Yellow Jackets with six digs.

Randolph-Macon will head to Atlanta to play in the Emory National Invitational this weekend. The Yellow Jackets will face No. 24 Berry on Friday at noon and eighth-ranked host Emory at 7 p.m. R-MC concludes the regular season on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Birmingham-Southern.
