ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) led all players with 12 kills as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team outlasted North Carolina Wesleyan 3-1 Tuesday evening in Crenshaw Gym.
The Yellow Jackets won their second straight match and raised their record to 6-3, winning 25-9, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-23. The Battling Bishops fell to 1-5.
R-MC dominated Game 1. Senior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) served the first six points as the Yellow Jackets sprinted to a 6-0 advantage. R-MC went up 9-1 and 12-2. With the score 12-3, the Yellow Jackets scored nine straight points to take a 21-3 advantage. The Bishops scored five of the next six points to narrow the deficit to 22-8 before R-MC tallied three of the final four points to make the final 25-9. The Yellow Jackets had a hit percentage of .370 with 12 kills and two errors, while the Bishops had -.143 with four kills and nine errors. Clark had four kills and eight total attacks, while Quinn recorded eight assists.
Game 2 was a tighter affair. NCWC jumped out to a quick 5-3 lead and went up 7-4 before R-MC scored four straight points to edge ahead 8-7. The Yellow Jackets were on top 10-9 before the Bishops tallied three straight to take a 12-10 lead. R-MC would again score four straight to assume a 14-12 advantage. The home team took leads of 17-14 and 19-15 before NCWC cut the margin to three at 21-18. The Yellow Jackets scored the final four points to take Game 2, 25-18. R-MC had 16 kills and one error for a hit percentage of .405, while the Bishops recorded 12 kills and two errors for .323. Senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) had five kills and 13 total attacks, while freshman Emma Young (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) dished out seven assists and sophomore Emily Steffan (Salem, Va./Salem) added six assists.
Game 3 was another close set. Neither team led by more than two until late in the game. R-MC was up 4-3 before NCWC scored three straight for a 6-4 advantage. The Yellow Jackets answered with four straight to reclaim the lead at 8-6. The Bishops built a 14-12 edge before four straight by the home team made it 16-14. R-MC led 19-17 before NCWC tallied seven of the next nine points to take a 24-21 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored three straight before the Bishops scored the game-winner at 25-23. R-MC had 10 kills and six errors for a hit percentage of .133, while NCWC had 10 kills and 10 errors for .000. Quinn and freshman Angela Tender (Manassas, Va./Stone Bridge) each had four assists.
The Yellow Jackets would not trail in the fourth game. R-MC jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 6-2. The Yellow Jackets built five-point leads at 8-3, 11-6, 13-8 and 15-10. NCWC put up four straight points to pull within one at 15-14. R-MC was up 18-17 before three straight points made it a 21-17 advantage. The Bishops again registered four consecutive points to knot the score at 21-21. R-MC scored two straight and a kill by Clark at 24-23 ended the match. The Yellow Jackets had 15 kills and 10 errors for a hit percentage of .104, while NCWC had eight kills and six errors for .053. Clark had six kills and 15 total attacks, while Quinn contributed nine assists.
Clark had 28 total attacks and two errors for a hit percentage of .357. Senior Morgan Seal (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) had eight kills, one error and 19 total attacks for a hit percentage of .368. Junior Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) recorded seven kills, two errors and 10 total attacks for a hit percentage of .500. McGilvery finished with 10 kills, 33 total attacks and 12 digs.
Quinn registered 21 assists and seven digs. Tender tallied 11 assists and six digs. Senior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) also had 12 digs.
Randolph-Macon begins defense of its 2017 ODAC title on Wednesday, Sept. 13 with a 7 p.m. home contest against Shenandoah in Crenshaw Gym.
