Back-to-Back ODAC Champs: 2016 Volleyball Season in Review

ASHLAND, Va.-  The Randolph-Macon volleyball had a tremendous 2016 season. The Yellow Jackets won the ODAC Regular season title with an 11-0 record, won the ODAC Championship without dropping a set and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. R-MC finished the season with a 24-8 record.

R-MC won its fifth overall ODAC title and made its sixth NCAA appearance in 2016. The team has become a powerhouse in the ODAC, winning all five of its titles in the last eight seasons. The team was coached by Bill Rogers and assisted by Savanna Love, Jared Horrigan and Mallory Carter. Rogers was named the ODAC and AVCA South Region Coach of the Year.

R-MC went on a 12 game winning streak from the end of September till the end of October. R-MC won four five set matches in that stretch and beat four regionally ranked teams (W&L, Bridgewater, Lynchburg and Clarkson).

The Yellow Jackets went into the ODAC Tournament as the number one seed and proved why they earned it. R-MC defeated Roanoke, Bridgewater and W&L 3-0. With the ODAC Championship, R-MC advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

In the first round R-MC played Stevenson where R-MC won a five set thriller in Fredericksburg. The Yellow Jackets were then defeated by top seeded Mary Washington in the second round.

Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was junior setter Erin Quinn (Morrisville, Va./ Cardinal Gibbons). Quinn finished the season with 1,223 assists, the third most in program history and averaged 10.53 per set, which as of Nov. 20, was the 10th best in the nation. She had her season best performance of 56 assists in the win over John Carroll.

The main hitter for the Yellow Jackets was sophomore Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./ Riverheads). Clark led the Jackets in kills in 2016 with 390, the fourth most in program history. She had a .236 hitting percentage throughout the year. Clark was second in the ODAC for kills and third for kills per set with 3.42. She had a season best 21 kills in the 3-2 victory over St. Mary’s with a .386 hitting percentage.

Another standout was junior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./ Penisula Catholic) at defensive specialist/libero. She leads the team in digs with 504 and has a .945 reception percentage on 622 total attempts.
